Oasis look set to reunite for a series of gigs after a 15-year hiatus to the delight of their legions of fans up and down the UK.

Warring brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher seem to finally have settled their differences to bury the hatchet. They will apparently perform together in a number of gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park and London's Wembley Stadium, while they have also been tipped to headline at Glastonbury Festival.

It is the reunion that has long been talked about but most thought would never happen. But why did Oasis split in the first place?

The band - along with Noel and Liam - teased that the big announcement will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, August 27) at 8am. That will mark almost 15 years to the day since Oasis dramatically split up after a pre-gig fight between the two brothers proved to be the final straw.

'Liam is the angriest man you'll ever meet'

Before the band were due to go onstage at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris on August 28, 2009. Liam apparently wielded Noel's guitar around 'like an axe' and the show was cancelled at the last minute along with the rest of the band's tour.

Noel issued a statement saying: "It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

A few days later he issued another statement bemoaning 'the lack of support and understanding from my management and my band mates' as he reiterated his decision to quit the band.

A few months earlier, in April 2009, Noel infamously said about Liam: "He's the angriest man you'll ever meet. He's like a man with a fork in a world of soup." Later that summer he also admitted: "Life would be easier without Oasis."

While the backstage incident may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, many people thought the split was a long time in coming.

Fighting in Oasis' early years

The brothers had seemingly been at loggerheads since Oasis hit the big time in the mid 1990s. During the band's first US tour in 1994, Liam frequently changed his brother's lyrics much to the annoyance of Noel. The lads had one of their many fights which moved Noel to abruptly quit the tour.

A year later Noel attacked Liam with a cricket bat after the latter brought a group of people back to the recording studio while the former was trying to work.

These early years set the tone for what was to come over the next decade and a half with Oasis' incredible chart success punctuated by disagreements between Liam and Noel.

Noel punches Liam after daughter insult

In 1996 the band were performing for MTV Unplugged but Liam pulled out at the last minute. That didn't stop him heckling Noel from a VIP box as he sang his brother's parts.

Then in 2000, a tour in Barcelona once again descended into violence as Noel split Liam's lip open when his brother questioned the paternity of Noel's daughter Anais.

Things came to a head in 2009, but it remains to be seen if Noel and Liam can stay civil for the next 12 months to give Oasis fans the reunion they have craved for years.
