Clear ‘stubborn’ blockages with ‘lifesaver’ item baking soda and vinegar ‘won't work’ on

Drain blockages are one of the most common reasons to call on a plumber, however, this can prove to be expensive and often can be sorted yourself.

From foul smells to water that simply won’t drain, blocked sinks are the root cause of all kinds of minor problems.

When these issues are allowed to get worse, however, life can quickly become a nightmare.

How you clear your blocked drain will depend on what caused the blockage in the first place.

For most blockages it is often recommended to use baking soda and white vinegar, however, experts at Danika Plumbing claim that this household remedy “won’t work on tough clogs”.

Instead, something that will work is a drain snake - a long, flexible wire or cable with a cutting head at the end used to clear blockages in drains.

The plumbing pros at My Home Plumbing said: “Drain snakes are a real lifesaver when bog-standard plungers or chemical and natural solutions aren’t up to the task.

“They are an effective way to cut through more stubborn blockages without damaging pipes or other plumbing fixtures.”

Drains snakes can be picked up on Amazon for £11.11, from B&Q for £12.99 and at Toolstaion for £14.98.

One of the first steps to unclog a drain with a plumber’s snake is to insert the snake into the drain. To do this, find the opening of the clogged drain and hold the end of the snake with one hand.

With your other hand, pull back on the snake’s handle. Insert the snake tip into the drain as far as possible until it reaches the blockage.

When inserting the snake, be sure to go slow and not force it into the drain to ensure you have the right angle.

When you feel the blockage, push down on the snake handle and start turning it clockwise. This will “help you break up the clog to remove it more easily”.

If you feel resistance or the snake isn’t moving, push down harder on the handle and continue turning.

Once you have broken up the clog, continue rotating the snake in a clockwise motion. This will help you get rid of any stubborn bits that are still lodged in the pipes.

Once you have broken up the clog and cleared any debris, slowly pull out the snake and run hot water through the pipes to ensure that all clogs are removed.

This will help “flush out any remaining clogged pieces” and ensure your drain is “completely clear”.
