GMB panel discuss a woman taking vacant England job

Good Morning Britain faced backlash today as show hosts Ranvir Singh and Richard Madeley discussed who should take over from England's football manager, Gareth Southgate. Social media went into a frenzy as they accused the ITV show of "trying to cause arguments" and suggested it was April Fool's Day, over the suggestion of a woman filling the role.

Richard said: "Here's the question we're asking this morning - Should a woman take over the top job in football? The chief exec of the Football Association has said that there is actually a possibility, with the search now on for a new manager."

He said that Sarina Wiegman is in the running after leading the women's team, The Lionesses, to victory. Showing betting odds on the screen, it seemed like she was the only woman who would be considered, with Chelsea's Graham Potter being the most likely replacement.

The show welcomed on two female guests, one who was all for having a woman lead the team and one against it. But as they shared their opinions, fans gave their thoughts on social media.

Posting to X (formerly Twitter) one joked: "Should england have a female manager??? I didn't realise it was April 1st #gmb".

Another fumed: "Stop trying to cause arguments you bunch of entitled idiots. If a woman is best to be a good manager then appoint her but don't do it just because she is a woman. #GMB."

A third wrote: "There's already been female managers in men's football. Keep up. #GMB". Someone else added: "Wokery gone mad...#GMB."

Someone else penned: "The debate ended about 10 years ago, you're just clinging onto it because you want to trend and you don't know how to without gender/race/sexuality baiting. Nobody cares. Move on. #GMB."

And others commented on Richard's comments, with one saying: "Madeley asking all the relevant questions…about changing rooms and hugging. #GMB."

It was confirmed yesterday that Gareth Southgate is stepping down as England manager in the wake of Sunday's defeat in the Euro 2024 final.

The 53-year-old, who managed over 100 games in charge of the national team, has resigned from his role after eight years.

A statement read: "After 102 games and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is to leave his role as manager of the Three Lions."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
