Brexit mastermind Lord David Frost has warned Labour will drag Britain back into the European Union's "orbit" and water down the UK-EU trade deal if the party wins the July General Election.

The Conservative peer said Sir Keir Starmer's party will undo the work carried out by former prime minister Boris Johnson's administration to secure a deal which made sure the UK was not subject to EU laws and courts.

Lord Frost's comments came after Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves told the Financial Times a Labour government would seek closer alignment with EU rules in areas such as the chemicals sector and an enhanced deal for workers in the City of London.

Britain's former chief negotiator told The Sun's Never Mind the Ballots that Britons have to face the prospect that Labour will water down the UK's Brexit deal.

He added: "No doubt they're going to try and get us closer into the single market even if there won't be like a stroke of a pen that does the whole thing. And we are going back in the orbit of the EU."

Lord Frost is the latest top Tory to warn Labour wants to undo Brexit. Cabinet Minister Chris Heaton-Harris, a leading Brexiteer, said on Monday (June 17) Labour wants to take Britain back to Brussels through the back door.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has insisted a Government led by his party would not rejoin the EU's single market, and customs union or bring back freedom of movement.

Sir Keir told LBC: "As you probably know I voted Remain and campaigned for Remain but, as you know, we have left the EU and we are not rejoining."

Brexit and Britain's future relations with the EU have largely been ignored by both main parties after almost four weeks of campaigning.

Labour has appeared reluctant to stir up passions around Brexit, particularly in former Leave-voting, Red Wall seats the party lost to the Tories in 2019 which it is seeking to regain.

Sir Keir this week used a visit to a port in Southampton to say a renegotiated Brexit deal could remove "an inhibitor" to economic growth.

He said: "We took a decision to leave the EU, so we are not going to go back in. But we think the deal we've got is botched, it's not good enough and I think many businesses would say: 'We need something that works better for us'."

Lord Frost suggested any Brexit-related pledges which involve negotiation with the EU will be hard work to deliver.

He said: "It's totally naive. The starry-eyed vision of Europe is making them think that just by being nice, they're going to get a better deal. I think a lot of them do think that.

"And that is just not healthy. They're in for quite a rude awakening when they turn up for the first time."
