The highly publicised rift between Prince Harry and Prince William shows no signs of abating – but one pscyhotherapist believes he knows why they are protective of their spouses Meghan Markle and Princess Kate.

The two princes have barely spoken in the four years since in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic and repercussions of Spare as well as Harry and Meghan’s Netflix docuseries.

However, as rumours swirl that Noel and Liam Gallagher could be about to bury the hatchet and bring Oasis back together, there are growing questions over what pushed William and Harry apart and whether they too could reunited in the future.

On Sunday evening, psychotherapist Noel McDermott and LBC presenter Rachel Johnson talked about whether there was any connection between the Gallagher and Windsor brotherly feuds.

Mr McDermott suggested that there might be because the one thing that both brothers had in common was their childhood relationships with their mothers.

He explained that “for both sets of boys there’s something about Mum going on” with both Princess Diana in the case of the Windsors and Peggy in the case of the Gallaghers playing pivotal roles.

Describing Diana as a “very potent figure”, Mr McDermott talked about interrupted attachments and how Harry and William may have been searching for that attachment in later life.

He said: “This sort of interrupted attachment, this attachment style that I talked about…trying to find a safe attachment which wasn’t available earlier on. Then you get overprotective about that and so that would be the theoretical model I’d be working with.”

This led Rachel Johnson to comment: “So what I’ve often thought is that Harry has replaced Princess Diana with Meghan in his emotional landscape…Kate is Princess Diana for William. So, any insult to their wives is insulting their mother.”

Mr McDermott added: “It’s really touching the trauma of that experience. So, touching upon that, training on that has to be done very lightly.”

While Harry and William continue to be distant from one another, it is rumoured that this distance could last as far into the future as William’s coronation.

Speaking to The Times, friends of Harry said that the prince has been “outrageously disloyal” and speculated that William may not invite his brother to his Coronation.

Of the brothers, another friend added: “They are estranged, which is dreadfully sad.”

While the royal pair may not be on speaking terms, they could soon be on geographical terms if Harry ever decides to move back to the UK.

But royal author Tom Quinn told the Mirror: “Meghan has said she's only prepared to return to England if she and Harry have a place of their own and the security they both feel is essential. Meghan will never return to the UK and stay with her husband's relatives.

“If the couple manage to find a permanent home and sort out the security issue they will certainly want to bring their children to the UK. But it's going to take a lot of diplomacy to get to the point where Archie and Lili are able to develop a genuine and warm relationship with their cousins George, Charlotte and Louis.
