An iconic British advert slogan is set to endure for another "100 years" it continues to resonate with the youth of today, according to social media users.

Three decades since Ronseal first introduced its 'does exactly what it says on the tin' tagline, the catchy phrase is now a common catchphrase used in everyday life.

One X (formerly Twitter) user revealed even Gen-Z, who were not yet born when the advert was released, appear to have cottoned onto the popular phrase.

The user posted: "My 16yo just used the phrase 'does what it says on the tin'. People are still going to be saying this in 100 years' time and only linguistic scholars will know it originated in an advert for Ronseal quick-drying wood stain."

The youngster reportedly used the phrase to describe a CD by Afro Celt Sound System they had purchased from Oxfam.

And it isn't just young people who have taken to using the phrase – it appears to have spread beyond the UK. One person commented: "I've heard Americans say it, and they haven't even seen the ads. It spreads."

Another added: "I remember its first showing on TV. Instant classic. I didn't even own a fence or shed but knew that when that day came it would be Ronseal for me."

One commentator noted the slogan came into "general use at work etc within weeks."

Meanwhile another added: "A former colleague of mine used to email files with the file name in the subject and Ronseal as the single word email text.

"Did this because the spam filters would pick up emails with attachments but no body text."

But not everyone likes the adage - some people reckoned it is now overused. One disgruntled social media user said: "Massively irritating as it's slipped into everyday language for people who 'tell it like it is', but it was a great piece of writing."

Ronseal's iconic phrase was so catchy it even prompted other brands to come up with copycat slogans. Toothpaste giant Colgate didn't stray too far, coining the similar phrase: "does exactly what it says on the tube".
