Emmerdale legend 'lands new TV role' on rival channel after soap exit

Matthew Wolfenden has reportedly bagged his first TV role since quitting Emmerdale after 17 years playing David Metcalfe - and it's said to be a very different gig

Emmerdale stalwart Matthew Wolfenden, best known as David Metcalfe on the ITV soap, has reportedly nabbed his first post-Emmerdale role. After an incredible 17-year run in the Dales beginning back in 2006, he announced his departure last year live on This Morning, telling viewers: "It feels like the right time. The door's left open. They're not killing me off, I've been promised. I'm allowed to tell you that. So who knows, I might be back, we will see."

After bowing out from Emmerdale, Matthew switched gears to podcasting, co-hosting Celebrity Side Hustles alongside former colleague Roxy Shahidi. But for fans pining to see him light up their televisions once again, their wishes may soon come true.

Gossip suggests he's slated to appear in the upcoming season of BBC's Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.

An insider spilled to The Sun: "Matthew has signed up for the show - he thinks it'll be a laugh and fun to be on TV as himself, not his soap character."

A prime-time favourite, BBC Two's Celebrity Antiques Road Trip boasts a roster of household names like Gemma Collins, and Love Island's Davide and Ekin-Su looking to make some lovely lolly from vintage pieces, reports the Mirror.

In 2018, Matthew tied the knot with his co-star Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle, and they are now doting parents to three boys.

An insider revealed to the paper that Matthew's decision to leave the soap was due to a lack of "gritty storylines".

The source stated: "Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change. He hasn't been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there. He's a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next."

Further, the insider added: "He's very excited about the opportunities available.

"He's only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
