BBC Breakfast: Jon Kay asked about gynaecological prop

BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay was left red-faced as he was put on the spot live on air during the latest edition of the monring show.

The 54-year-old presenter was back on our screens on Wednesday (July 17) alongside Nina Warhurst, who was filing in for Sally Nugent.

They woke up the nation with the latest headlines from around the globe, including the news that the NHS are planning to roll out "game-changer" DIY cervical screening tests to millions.

The kits are like a Covid swab but longer and are posted to a lab for analysis. The NHS called the findings extremely positive and is assessing whether to roll out the scheme.

Jon and Nina welcomed Dr Azizi Sesay and Karen Berridge to the studio who talked viewers through how it works they visit to the GP and why it is sometimes off-putting for women.

Dr Sesay brought along props with her for the demonstration and she turned to Jon and ask: "Do you know what this is?" After a short pause, Jon said: "Jon, Jon. I am aware of this. I remember biology O-level."

The GP went on to discuss the process of a cervcial screening test using her prop and explaned how the kits would work compared to a tradition check up.

There are more than 3,000 new cases of cervical cancer in the UK each year. The cervix is the small opening joining the top of the vagina to the base of the womb.

Viewers watching at home took to social media to praise the discussion. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: "A very important subject and well discussed this morning." Another added: "Really interesting segment on smear tests #bbcbreakfast I hope this is rolled out further, it’s baffling that self tests aren’t a massive thing."

A third person typed: "These HPV self test kits have been discussed since 2021...so when are they actually going to give them out nationwide to save lives? When it comes to womens health, it's never a fast process in this country. #bbcbreakfast
