Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk rematch plunged into doubt as Derek Chisora starts 'rumour'

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are set to meet again later this year, but one of them may have other ideas according to Derek Chisora

Derek Chisora has cast doubt over Tyson Fury’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. He’s claimed the Ukrainian is planning to return to cruiserweight.

The Gypsy King is set to fight him again following his split-decision defeat in Saudi Arabia last weekend. A rematch clause was inserted into the initial contract, with a date in October pencilled in.

However, that won’t be possible if Usyk drops his heavyweight belts and goes back to his boxing roots, which Chisora has suggested is on the cards.

“There’s no point bothering with a rematch because the undisputed is done,” he said via Boxing Social, alluding to the fact Usyk will be stripped of his IBF title as he’s unable to defend it.

Chisora continued: “I heard a rumour, I’m gonna start this rumour anyway. Oleksandr is dropping down to cruiserweight. That’s the rumour right now.”

Usyk himself hinted at that before fighting Fury, telling TNT Sports: "This is an incredible feeling, having the opportunity to be here now and do what God allows me to do.

"All the historic champions; all these boxers have done a lot for boxing. Rocky Marciano was never defeated, he died undefeated. Maybe I will go back to cruiserweight and win."

However, Frank Warren has this week insisted there will be a rematch, arguing: "I think it will be better than the original fight. They both know each other, they've shared the ring and they'll be looking to use what they've gained from the fight as an advantage to beat their opponent."

And Fury is in no doubt about what he wants, making his desire to run it back perfectly clear to his promoter. Warren added: "He's only asking for the rematch because he thinks he can win.

“He believes in himself and it would cement his legacy. Everyone out there thinks Usyk is the best out there so let's see what Tyson does. He rang me and he said he wants the rematch so here we are."
