Williams have vowed to keep supporting Logan Sargeant's racing career despite brutally sacking him ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. It was confirmed on Tuesday that Sargeant had been relieved of his duties after failing to pick up a single championship point in 2024.

The American driver will be replaced by Franco Colapinto, who is stepping in alongside Alex Albon until the end of the season. Sargeant was due to leave the team in December to make way for Carlos Sainz but his exit was brought forward in humiliating fashion.

After the news of his departure was announced, Williams sent a public message of support to Sargeant on X (formerly Twitter).

They said: "We’d like to thank Logan for everything he has done the past two seasons. He will remain a member of the Williams family and we will be supporting him to continue his racing career."

It remains to be seen where Sargeant will go next, with the 23-year-old unlikely to get another chance in F1 for the foreseeable future. Rumours have suggested that he could switch to IndyCar to race for the new PREMA team next year.

Williams team principal James Vowles admitted that it was not an easy decision to sack Sargeant but explained that he felt it was necessary to improve their chances of scoring regular points.

In a statement, he said: "To replace a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season.

"We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximise every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle.

"We also believe in investing in our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy. Franco is getting a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what he is capable of across the final nine rounds of the season.

"This is undoubtedly incredibly tough on Logan, who has given his all throughout his time with Williams, and we want to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude. Logan remains a talented driver and we will support him to continue his racing career for the future."

Sargeant only managed to claim one point during his spell at Williams, which came at last year's United States Grand Prix. He finished the race in 12th but was bumped up two places when Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified.
