Manchester United have reportedly initiated contact over four potential midfield signings with plans to add at least one to their ranks for next season. Strengthening the middle of the park is high on United’s agenda this summer, with Erik ten Hag’s current options for the position struggling last term.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are coming towards the end of their time at Old Trafford. The Brazilian may even be sold this summer and he has interest from the Saudi Pro League. Meanwhile, Sofyan Amrabat is unlikely to see his loan from Fiorentina turned into a permanent switch.

Mason Mount, a £70m addition from Chelsea 12 months ago, had his impact limited by a succession of injuries. The 25-year-old’s dismal year was compounded by his failure to be included in the England squad for Euro 2024.

Work to improve Ten Hag’s midfield is reportedly well underway. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, INEOS chiefs have been making calls around four midfielders who could be signed by the Premier League club.

The identities of the quartet are unclear, but United have been linked with a string of midfielders over the past few weeks. Everton’s Amadou Onana, who is currently playing for Belgium at Euro 2024, is one.

Onana, a defensive midfielder, shone for Everton last season, playing in 30 Premier League matches.

Benfica teenager Joao Neves has also been widely mooted as a potential United target. The 19-year-old played in all but one Primeira Liga matches last term and has the eyes of Europe’s biggest teams watching his performances. He has also broken into the Portugal national team.

Wolves’ Joao Gomes may also be of interest to the Old Trafford outfit. Morten Hjulmund, who helped Sporting Lisbon win the Portuguese top-flight last term, has also been linked with United and might have been one of the players enquired about.

United’s ramping up of their transfer activity comes a week after it was confirmed that Ten Hag would be retained as head coach. INEOS spoke with Thomas Tuchel but decided to keep their Dutch manager for another campaign.

Speaking on Dutch television during England’s win over Serbia on Sunday, Ten Hag revealed that United chiefs had turned up on his doorstep while he was holidaying in Ibiza.

“The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me."
