Liverpool 'pushing' to finally land Arne Slot's first signing in final days of window

The Reds are the only team in the top flight yet to spend this summer, but they are close to bringing in a new signing for Arne Slot.

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on their first signing of the summer after agreeing a deal to capture goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.

The Georgia international made it clear he was desperate to join the Reds this summer after they registered their interest in early August. However, the two clubs haggled for weeks in protracted. negotiations before landing on a £29.6million package.

But it is reported the two clubs will meet again this week to finalise the switch, which will include a sell-on clause for the Spanish club, with 'contacts already scheduled'.

According to Fabrizio Romano, there are minor details to be sorted such as how the payment will be structured before Mamardashvili is given the green light to seal his move to Merseyside.

Liverpool are 'pushing' to get their first summer signing over the line for the 24-year-old, who was one of the stars of Euro 2024 after some superb individual displays between the sticks.

Should the two clubs find common ground on the fee structure, Mamardashvili would then undergo a medical and sign his contract before returning to the Mestalla on loan for the 2024-25 campaign.

Mamardashvili's move looked to have hit a roadblock in early August before his advisers urged Valencia to return to the negotiating table to push through a deal, which helped negotiations along.

Arne Slot is yet to bring in any new faces since taking over from Jurgen Klopp in June. But the Dutchman has spoken of his satisfaction with the current squad and further big-money arrivals are not expected at Anfield in the final weeks of the season.

The Reds have won their first two matches of the season without conceding a goal and are one of four sides to have a 100 per cent record so far this season.

There are question marks over the long-term future of Caoimhin Kelleher, their current backup shot-stopper who has deputised when Alisson has been unavailable.

Kelleher is keen to play first-team football on a regular basis and the Republic of Ireland international must accept his future lies away from Liverpool.

Several Premier League sides have been credited with an interest in the £25m-rated goalkeeper. It appears he will be sticking around for this season at least, though, with Mamardashvili not scheduled to link up with Liverpool until the summer of 2025.

He appeared in all but one of Valencia's La Liga games last season, conceding 41 goals and keeping 13 clean sheets as Ruben Baraja's side finished seventh in the Spanish top flight.

However, his side were beaten on Saturday after a 3-1 defeat to Celta Vigo as Los Che remain winless from their first games of the new campaign.
