'An underrated seaside city was named one of the UK’s best staycations and I agree’
Portsmouth was recently named as one of the UK's 10 best city breaks and I couldn't agree more.
When Britons plan a holiday to the coast, it’s usually Cornwall, Devon or Northumberland that’s at the top of the list.
But Cornwall is one of the UK’s most expensive holiday destinations and accommodation is usually booked up very far in advance.
However, there are plenty of lesser-known options that offer a fantastic holiday experience by the coast. Which? Travel recently named Portsmouth among the best UK city breaks.
As a frequent visitor to Portsmouth, I’d definitely agree. The Which? survey gave Portsmouth four stars for cultural sights and value for money.
So what is there to do in Portsmouth?
Attractions
Perhaps the reason Portsmouth isn’t quite as popular as other seaside hotspots is because it has a pebble rather than a sandy beach. But I’ve always found Southsea Beach to be very clean and relatively uncrowded, even on a sunny day.
The promenade is also a fantastic place for a walk and you'll be able to spot Spitbank Fort, a historic sea fort just off the coast.
For fans of history, Portsmouth has a huge range of activities. Check out the incredible Mary Rose Museum to get an interactive experience onboard King Henry VIII’s flagship.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is one of the UK’s best places to get to grips with the country’s naval history.
Children will love Southsea’s Model Village while the city’s rose garden is also a beautiful spot to relax.
Shopping
Although Portsmouth only picked up three stars for shopping, the Gunwharf Quays outlet complex is a fantastic place to search for designer bargains.
Food and drink
I love the Southsea Beach Cafe which sits right on the seafront and sometimes hosts delicious BBQ nights during summer. If you’re looking for afternoon tea, try the Tenth Hole cafe and have a go on the golf course afterwards.
Value for money
Portsmouth is much better value than similar coastal spots and it has a large student population which helps to keep prices low.
Even in summer, it never feels terribly crowded and it’s easy to see why it deserved a place in the UK’s top 10 city breaks.
