When you step onto a plane, ready for your well-deserved getaway, you're invariably met with the warm smile of a cabin crew member.

They stand there, poised and polished, offering a cheery hello that eases us into our journey. But it turns out their role extends far beyond mere pleasantries.

Sure, flight attendants are on hand to tend to passengers, serve up refreshments and oversee a secure flight – but they have another crucial function.

Unbeknownst to many, they've been sizing us up from the get-go. A TikTok video has taken the internet by storm after user MrsMiva, a flight attendant herself, spilled an industry secret.

In her viral revelation, she explains the true purpose behind the cabin crew's welcoming routine as we embark.

Over the clip of herself, she wrote: "Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of politeness, but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly?"

The revelation has racked up over a million likes, leaving hordes of flyers utterly flabbergasted. The idea of being subtly scrutinised upon boarding was news to many.

One viewer expressed their astonishment, commenting: "Wait, is there a reason why they always ask me where I sit when I go onboard? " Another said: "To see if you're 1. Safe to fly (not intoxicated) and to see if you could help in an emergency."

A third person chimed in with: "And looking for suspicious behaviour." Meanwhile, a fourth added: "We are also picking out good candidates in the event of an emergency."

Several individuals shared their personal experiences to support this theory. One recounted: "I was denied an international flight from England to America because they thought I'd die en route from being so sick."

Another quipped: "True, and it's the toughest part of the day. Without being paid!"

However, not everyone was convinced by this notion, with some resorting to humour. One joker suggested that cabin crew were nice to them because they're so "cute and cosy".

One individual replied: "No they greet me because they like me." Another declared: "No they say hi because I'm super cool and awesome - that's why."

A third added: "No - it's because they think I'm super pretty." Many others echoed these sentiments.

More often than not, your flight attendant will greet you warmly as you board the plane. Typically, they'll utter phrases such as "welcome aboard" or "good morning/afternoon/evening", accompanied by a radiant smile.

Regardless of the reason behind their cordiality, it's always appreciated. It helps to put us at ease before take-off.
