Like many R & B and soul singers, Bill Withers came from humble beginnings. Born in a small West Virginia town, Withers used the Army as an opportunity to get away from his small corner of the world. After a long stint, he landed in Los Angeles and got a job at an airplane assembly plant while he wrote and played songs on the side. He was discovered and quickly signed to a deal. His first single contained the 1971 number one hit "Ain't No Sunshine." Through the 1970s and early '80s, Withers continued his career before retiring from the spotlight in 1985. Although he stopped releasing new material, Wither's influence continued, as his songs became standard covers for up and coming R&B singers and samples for hip-hop and electronic dance music artists.
