Ho‘oulu ‘Āina is a 100-acre nature preserve nestled in the back of Kalihi Valley. Here the community comes together around forest, food, knowledge, spirituality, and health activity. As we restore this land to productivity, giving back the values of our ancestors, we learn that healing is reciprocal.

Hale Lauele

A Classroom, Wood Mill, and Wood Working Studio in Nature, Hale Lauele is a “house of imagination.”

KKV is planning to build the first large-scale purpose-built structure at Ho’oulu ‘Āina, replacing the temporary tents that have served as our program spaces for over a decade.

Kalihi Valley is one of the rainiest places on the Island of O’ahu and Hale Lauele will provide much needed shelter for our wood mill, wood working studio, classroom, restrooms, and outdoor kitchen. The design aims to be quiet and respectful of the ‘āina. It will provide approximately 7,500 square feet of covered space under which teachers, master carvers, and staff will reconnect our community with the land, the forest, Hawaiian traditions, language, and culture.

In 2019, Ho’oulu ‘Aina engaged over 15,000 members of the community of all ages. This past year, Ho’oulu ‘Aina has hired dozens of people, especially Pacific Islanders, to support KKV’s Covid emergency response efforts. Through Hale Lauele, KKV will create new and meaningful jobs, restore our land through traditional practices, inspire and educate youth, and provide space for cultural and collective healing to take place.
