Jannik Sinner has defeated Taylor Fritz in the U.S. Open men's final to end the 2024 Grand Slam season. Sinner began and finished it with titles, winning his first major at the Australian Open in January. The No. 1-ranked player from Italy prevented Fritz from becoming the first American man to win a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open with his victory Sunday. Aryna Sabalenka also won both hard-court majors this year. Sinner and Sabalenka will try to defend their Australian Open titles when the 2005 tournament begins in Melbourne on Jan. 12.

After injuries and mental-health struggles, Andrew "Beef" Johnston might be back as a force in golf after finishing third at the European Masters won by fellow Englishman Matt Wallace in a playoff. Wallace holed an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to beat Alfredo Garcia-Heredia of Spain in the first playoff hole and win his fifth European tour event. The story of the week might be the re-emergence of Johnston. He is a bearded, larger-than-life entertainer who established himself as one of the biggest characters in the sport in his breakthrough year in 2016 but has plummeted to as low as No. 2,055 in the rankings.

The 91st-ranked Wallace won the last of his four European tour titles six years ago. He made five birdies in six holes, including back-to-back chip-ins at Nos. 4 and 5, to close his front nine on Friday. Then he had three birdies in a row from No. 14 at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in the Alps. He is 14 under par overall. That is equal or better than three of the last six winning scores at the event.

Alex finished tied for fifth on his debut at Crans-Montana last year. Matt won the tournament in 2017 and 2018 and is looking to become just the fourth player to win it three times. Matt Fitzpatrick shot 66 and was in a six-man group three strokes off the lead.

Golfweek reports there will be a made-for-TV match involving top players from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The manager for world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka confirms that Scheffler and Rory McIlroy will take on Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. Among details still to be announced were when in December the match would be held and on which course. But it will be a rare occasion of players from the PGA Tour competing against players who defected for the Saudi riches of LIV Golf in 2022. The only other times they face each other are in the four majors and the Olympics.

Justin Thomas will be missing his first American team since 2016 when the U.S. faces the International team in the Presidents Cup. Jim Furyk on Tuesday filled out the rest of his Presidents Cup roster with six captain's picks. They include Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, along with Max Homa and Brian Harman. Furyk's six picks happened to be the next 12 in the U.S. standings after the six qualifiers. International captain Mike Weir also had some tough choices for the Sept. 27-30 matches at Royal Montreal. He added three Canadians to his team. That meant leaving out Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. Weir choked up talking about having to make that phone call to them.

Scottie Scheffler finished the year with a 68.01 actual scoring average, the lowest in PGA Tour history. Most references to scoring average is the adjusted version that has been recognized for more than 80 years. That reflects a score compared with the rest of the field that week. But there's something to be gleaned about Scheffler's dominance using the actual scoring average. It was a half-shot lower on average than anyone else. Such a margin is rare. Tiger Woods twice had an actual scoring average of a full shot or more than anyone else during his peak years in golf.

Four strokes behind Jin Young Ko entering play Sunday after blowing a six-stroke lead Saturday, Ryu closed with an 8-under 64 to match Ko at 15-under 273, then beat the fellow South Korean player with a par on the first hole of a playoff. Ryu shot a career-best 62 on Friday to take the six-stroke lead, then had a 78 on Saturday. On Sunday, Ryu birdied the first four holes and six of the first eight. After a rain delay of a little over two hours, she parred the final two holes. Ko shot 68, missing an 8-foot birdie putt on 18 in regulation.

Scottie Scheffler has polished off the best year in golf in nearly two decades with the biggest prize. He had a few nervous moments at the Tour Championship until running off three straight birdies around the turn at East Lake and pulling away from Collin Morikawa. That made Scheffler the FedEx Cup champion with its $25 million bonus. Scheffler won seven times on the PGA Tour and an Olympic gold medal. The eight victories are the most since Tiger Woods won eight times in 2006. The FedEx Cup bonus pushed his season earnings to just over $62.2 million.

Niklas Norgaard is finally a European tour winner at age 32. The final hour aged him at the British Masters. Norgaard had a four-shot lead until he botched three straight chip shots on the par-5 15th hole and made double bogey. But he held his nerve by making a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th to stay two shots ahead. A simple par on the final hole at The Belfry gave him a 72. That was good for a two-shot victory over Thriston Lawrence of South Africa. Rasmus Hojgaard shot a 65 to finish third.

Jannik Sinner has avoided the sort of monumental upset that knocked Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz out of the U.S. Open in recent days. The top-ranked Sinner never gave his third-round opponent on Saturday even a moment to hope for that sort of victory. Sinner beat Chris O'Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in under two hours. Since dropping his opening set at Flushing Meadows, Sinner has won nine in a row, dropping a total of just 18 games. Other men's winners included Daniil Medvedev, Jack Draper and Tomas Machac. Players advancing in the women's bracket included No. 1 Iga Swiatek, Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Muchova.

Sahith Theegala called a two-shot penalty on himself for an infraction only he could see. It was particularly honorable considering the money is at stake in the FedEx Cup finale. Theegala feels fairly certain his club brushed a small amount of sand as he took it back while playing out of the bunker on the third hole. Video evidence did not make it clear. Theegala says he thought he saw a bit of sand move in his peripheral vision. He says he'll sleep better knowing he took a penalty. But he'd sleep better if he the video evidence was clear.

Jin Young Ko started the third round six shots behind. She ends the FM Championship with a two-shot lead over Lauren Coughlin. Ko birdied the first two holes and the last two holes on her way to a 67. But she got plenty of help from Haeran Ryu. The 23-year-old Ryu was coming off a 62. She was 16 shots worse the next day. That six-shot lead was gone in six holes and Ryu wound up with a 78. Coughlin is going for her third LPGA win in the last six weeks. It's the last event before the Solheim Cup.
