The 2024 Emmy nominations are here.

Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale announced the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards on Wednesday morning. The Emmy-winning actors were joined by Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego at the ceremony, which was streamed live from the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Toward the end of the announcement, Abrego surprised Ralph with the news that she had once again been nominated for supporting comedy actress for her role on “Abbott Elementary.”

Netflix led the Emmy nominations with 107 overall, but it was FX that received the most in the marquee categories, including a record tally for ‘The Bear.’

Among the top nominees in comedy was FX’s “The Bear,” which swept the comedy field at the strike-delayed 2023-but-in-2024 Emmy Awards held in January. This time around, the culinary workplace comedy earned 23 nominations — including series, lead actor (Jeremy Allen White), lead actress (Ayo Edebiri) and multiple supporting nods (Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Ebon Moss-Bachrach) — setting a new record for nods in a single year in the comedy field. “Only Murders in the Building” and “Hacks” followed with 21 and 16 nominations each, respectively.

FX’s epic Japanese historical drama, “Shōgun,” led on the drama side, with 25 total nominations, including nods for series, lead actress (Anna Sawai), lead actor (Hiroyuki Sanada) and supporting actor (Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira). “The Crown” followed with 18 nominations. “Fallout,” “The Morning Show” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” each earned 16.

Television Academy voters checked off most of the boxes, but the nominations still managed to deliver a fair number of surprises, pleasant and otherwise, columnist Glenn Whipp writes.
