Here's how you can effectively manage up and influence your boss in the non-profit industry.

At the end of the day even the brightest team member is only going to matter to the boss if you help them achieve the goals that reflect on them. When that happens, then making strategic suggestions or taking on a more significant project will allow you to have more control over your own work. A smart boss will see there are more ways to reach a goal besides their own style and give you latitude and gratitude.

Being aligned in the way you think about goals and how to achieve them is incredibly important. Not to say you need to be a "yes man," but you need to understand what is important to those who manage you. Being able to demonstrate this understanding, and continue to deepen it, will be the first step in finding ways to manage up.

Offer solutions to problems, demonstrating critical thinking and resourcefulness. For e.g, when faced with a budget constraint, I proposed alternative fundraising strategies to ensure the project's success. Build Trust: Establish a positive dynamic by consistently delivering results and showing your boss that you are a reliable asset. Communicate Effectively: Clearly articulate your ideas and solutions, ensuring your boss understands the value and feasibility of your proposals. Work closely with your boss to ensure that your solutions align with their goals and priorities. By doing so, you can build a strong working relationship and gain their trust. Be open to feedback and willing to adjust your approach based on your boss's input.

Building trust is paramount in being able to manage up/influence work. Those working "above" you need to know they can rely on you, the value of your perspective, and the quality of your work. You can do this by performing well, demonstrating interest in learning, and being respectful when conveying your opinions.

Many times, your boss has too much on their plate and would love to be able to delegate more of it. The reason why they don't is because they are worried it won't be done with the level of quality they would complete it with, or they don't have time to explain how to do it. Seek out these opportunities/low hanging fruit ways you can help lighten their load. This will build trust and allow more opportunities to arise.
