How can you manage version control in a collaborative database design project?

I think that using Git has become the industry standard for version control, as I haven't seen Mercurial or Subversion systems in the wild. Inside git you can create a repository or a branch for the database code, which I manage with Make files handling the options (create the database, schemas, views, tables, and functions, also handling updates to data, and running tests). This way a developer can have a local instance of the database, and sync it with the test and production environments with just a pull and make update. Changes are tracked, test data can be synced, or even with use of test scripts that can handle multiple database connections, you can verify that the data and schemas are the same in your different environments.

In a collaborative database project, managing versions posed a challenge. To address this, we adopted Git. Each member had a branch for specific tasks, ensuring smooth progress. Regular sync-ups and meetings maintained alignment and resolved conflicts. Once, John and Emma faced conflicting changes. They calmly discussed, found compromises, and documented decisions. In my professional career we have always treated DDL, Stored Procedures, and even DML needed to initialize reference code tables the same as any other source code. We always checked it into whatever source code control system we used at the time. Currently Git is the flavor of the month VCS and we use it to store our database code along with our Java and Angular source code as well. Since very rarely you will be working in a vacuum from the rest of a Development organization, the choice of VCS should be whatever your team's or company's SDLC tooling policy dictates. This will help with a consolidated CI/CD pipeline as well, so you can deploy changes to the data model along with the rest of the code and make the build team or DevOps happy.

Perform the data analysis and learn about the the Version control in a Verson control system by evaluating what kind of data is to be stored. Then depending on the data evaluate the strenght and flexibility of systems like Git hub, Subversion, Mercurial or CVS. All of them have good functionality however may or may not be suitable in a Big data landscape. The data migrations can ocurr using ETL tools or IBM tools available in the market.

There are great and not so great tools out there for schema migration tools, some for Oracle, Snowflake, or SQL Server, the thing is that some of these tools can be quite expensive and sometimes the humble Make file is all you need, exporting the DDLs and definitions in separate files and having targets in your makefile can simplify and automate all the operations needed to sync and generate the changes from one target to another. You can handle schema creation or updates two ways: tearing down or updating. This can be leveraged with green-blue environments, where you create a blue env to apply the changes, and convert it to the green env, just changing where the application code points to.

I like to separate schema changes as QA, and data changes as DQ. To sync both in almost any environment the tools I use are generic, makefiles for the schema, and either python scripts to check the data in the tables. Or the diff tool. The advantages are that these tools are common place, free and can run on almost any server. My strategy is to checksum the sorted data and compare line by line. This works for catalogs and source data from external files, for transactional data, having triggers that log the changes to a control table and having a daily count of data for a table help manage outages, data loss and help guide and optimize restoring. Remember to back up periodically the most frequently changed tables to minimize data loss.

This is always a challenge, that is why using makefiles, and having clear naming conventions help, for example in a makefile the schemas and tables are performed in a specified order given the naming conventions such as 001_create_schema.sql or something like that. This ensures execution order is sequential and changes and errors can be pinpointed and debugged in a timely manner.

The testing and review process for databases can be somewhat automated with test scripts that compare schemas, and data transformations can be monitored with a) synthetic data, b) sample data. Sample generation and synthetic data are topics on their own, but the usefulness of both techniques can not be denied. For the code, something like SQLFluff which is open source. Checking the runtime of EXPLAIN ANALYZE commands for runtime can also be automated in tests, and give a good performance measure.
