What do you do if your team members in accounting have untapped strengths?

Unearthing hidden talents within your accounting team can be a game-changer. Talk to your team and conduct skills assessments to discover their strengths beyond their current roles. The question doesn't specifically state that the untapped strengths are in accounting. If they are in the accounting area, work more closely with them to help them use the strengths. Give them the type of work that would allow them to 'show off'. Move them onto the promotion track. If the strengths are not in the accounting area, speak with them to understand what they want for their future. You could encourage them to apply for positions in other areas of the company, letting them know you would support them with it. Sometimes the best employees are not in the best job for them. Support them to get there, whether in accounting or not.

There are many facets and responsibilities in an Accounting Department, including vendor management, budget work and software assistance. In my experience, the accounting teams have been diverse and had multiple verticle responsibilities.

Encourage growth by providing stretch assignments - Challenge team members by assigning them stretch assignments or projects that push them outside of their comfort zones and allow them to leverage their untapped strengths. This can foster growth, development, and confidence-building while providing valuable learning experiences.

Na minha opinião um bom gestor é aquele que tem como objetivo formar seu sucessor a partir de sua própria equipe. Se ele consegue incutir esse pensamento em sua equipe, a tendência é que, por um lado, os superiores se vejam incentivados a acompanhar mais de perto o desempenho de seus comandados e, por outro, os comandados se sentirão mais a vontade para buscar maior apoio de seus superiores. Para que isso dê certo, no entanto, caberá ao Gestor da área ficar atento, buscando inibir avaliações subjetivas dos superiores e demonstrando o mesmo empenho em preparar seu próprio sucessor.

Se considerarmos que o sucessor de um líder se comprova pela sua capacidade de formar um sucessor tecnicamente tão bom ou melhor que ele, um ponto que deve ser trabalhado é dar a oportunidade de todos na equipe terem a oportunidade de trabalhar ou, no mínimo, vivenciar todas as atividades da área em que trabalha. Na medida em que o colaborador tem conhecimento das atividades do setor, entendendo o que é prioritário, o que é crítico e o que são as rotinas (o que é necessário), a evolução dos trabalhos tende a ocorrer de forma mais fluída, permitindo quase que uma auto-gestão por parte da equipe, aliviando a pressão do Gestor em relação a cobrança e a cumprimento de prazos.

Mesmo especialistas devem ficar atentos ao seu entorno. Legislação, processos, ambiente, etc, estão sempre sofrendo alterações e nem sempre sentimos ou percebemos essas mudanças enquanto estamos desenvolvendo nosso trabalho. Se dar a oportunidade de conhecer, conversar, interagir dentro e fora de sua área é de fundamental importância no processo criativo. De nada adianta cobrar esse comportamento da equipe se o Gestor não demonstrar esse comportamento, essa atitude. Por mais que ele cobre e até incentive esse tipo de atitude, o exemplo irá dar a visão prática aos colaboradores que, a partir do que observarem e entenderem entre o que está sendo cobrado e a forma como o Gestor age em situação semelhante.

Existe uma máxima nos esportes que prega que "treino é treino e jogo é jogo". O bom Gestor é muito parecido com um pai ou uma mãe: tem que estar longe o suficiente para que o filho se arrisque, se desenvolva, porém perto o suficiente para intervir, seja para ajudar, orientar ou corrigir... o grande desafio de educar. Os desafios do Educador são basicamente os mesmos do Gestor. A melhor forma de se certificar que seus colaboradores estão engajados, atentos, integrados é dar-lhes a oportunidade de participar ativamente dos processos e, quando o possível, das decisões, de forma controlada e com cuidado para não expô-los de forma a que uma eventual falha possa prejudicar seu futuro profissional.

Tendemos a buscar identificar os pontos falhos, os defeitos, os problemas e muitas vezes sequer notamos os pontos fortes, os diferenciais daquilo/daquele que observamos, principalmente no ambiente profissional. Errar faz parte do aprendizado e, portanto, não pode ser demonizado nas organizações (mais importante que não errar é ter a capacidade de reconhecer um erro e ter a capacidade de corrigi-lo). O acerto, a iniciativa, a capacidade de inovação, a criatividade, a colaboração também devem ser percebidos e elogiados... isso não depende de hora marcada, deve ocorrer de forma natural.

This goes without saying as recognition of efforts, successes & achievements will inevitably motivate & incentivise the individual or the team to do better the next time around. This is human nature with a pat on the back making the individual or the team to perform better in pursuit of excellence.

Be interested & be involved in their career development to understand their strengths from regular dialogues with the staff. Communication is key to get to know one another better. Give opportunities to the staff for them to demonstrate what they do best. Stand as a mentor to the staff & encourage the staff to tap on his or her strength & tell the staff that your aim is to groom him or her to move up the career ladder. This will motivate & incentivise the staff to unlock his or her hidden talents & to pursue excellence in his or her performance going forward.
