Dealing with a difficult student in your class. How can you effectively communicate and connect with them?

Ouvir ativamente demonstra respeito pelo aluno e estabelece uma base sólida de confiança mútua. Quando os alunos percebem que são ouvidos de maneira verdadeira eles se sentem valorizados e são mais propensos a se engajar no processo de aprendizagem. Cada aluno traz consigo uma bagagem única de experiências e desafios pessoais. Ao reconhecer e validar suas preocupações, criamos um ambiente de aprendizagem mais inclusivo e acolhedor. Isso não significa necessariamente concordar com todas as opiniões do aluno, mas sim demonstrar empatia e respeito pela sua perspectiva.

At the start of any course or workshop, it's important to establish your credibility and interest in their success. Ideally, you'll cultivate trust and respect from the start but you can't always control your audience. Once you recognize the negative dynamic, try to triage it and identify the best time to address it. Oftentimes, feedback is best delivered 1:1 but if it's becoming very disruptive, you are allowed to ask the student to hold their comments and connect during a break. While the knee-jerk reaction might be to get upset with the student, try to give them the benefit of the doubt and look for good in them. People can sense when someone isn't on their side and try to genuinely get in a headspace to build a bridge.

Ao lidar com alunos difíceis, estabelecer limites claros é fundamental para manter um ambiente de aprendizado produtivo e respeitoso na sala de aula. Com minha experiência em sala de aula, entendo a importância de definir claramente minhas expectativas em relação ao comportamento e ao desempenho dos alunos. Antes de mais nada, é é necessário comunicar de forma explícita o que se espera dos alunos em termos de comportamento, participação e respeito mútuo. Isso inclui desde o cumprimento dos horários até a maneira como devem interagir durante as atividades acadêmicas.

Ao lidar com um aluno difícil, a comunicação eficaz é essencial para garantir entendimento mútuo e facilitar o progresso acadêmico. É importante ser direto e específico ao fornecer instruções e feedback. Devemos nos comunicar de forma clara o que se espera do aluno em termos de tarefas, prazos e padrões de desempenho. Evitar ambiguidades e utilizar uma linguagem acessível ajudam a minimizar mal-entendidos e aumentam a probabilidade de sucesso na aprendizagem. Cabe lembrar da importância de estar aberto ao diálogo construtivo e receptivo ao feedback. Isso cria um ambiente em que o aluno se sente encorajado a expressar suas preocupações e dúvidas, facilitando a resolução de problemas e o desenvolvimento de soluções.

Sometimes bad behaviour is caused by deeper issues, such as family problems or anything else that we cannot see. When such student feels supported chances that he will improve his behaviour increase. Sometimes all a problematic student needs is to be listened and supported with encouraging words and practical help.

Incentivar um aluno difícil a refletir sobre seu comportamento e seu impacto no próprio aprendizado e nos colegas é fundamental para promover mudanças positivas. A reflexão envolve examinar suas ações, pensamentos e decisões de maneira crítica e construtiva. Isso permite ao aluno entender melhor as consequências de suas escolhas e comportamentos, tanto para si mesmo quanto para os outros ao seu redor. Ao encorajar a reflexão, como professor, posso ajudar o aluno a desenvolver autoconsciência e responsabilidade. Isso pode ser feito por meio de perguntas que estimulem a reflexão, como "Como suas ações afetaram seu desempenho acadêmico?" ou "Como suas palavras impactaram seus colegas?".

Excellent conversation, we are dealing with a generation that is very difficult to teach. They don’t want to study, they are disengaged in class, they will be sitting in class clicking on their laptops like they are learning anything, when you ask a question they have a blank look on the face. Communication is very clear and expectations are equally clear but they are just uninterested. What is the solution to this classroom behaviour? One thing that I strongly believe is that charity begins at home. How are parents raising their children? Is it possible for this generation to be taught the importance of taking notes by using the pen and paper to write rather than the computer? When you save on a computer, the information is for use later.

If we truly want to continue to grow as teachers, we need to consider how labeling a student as "difficult" reflects on ourselves. What underlying assumptions have we made about what it means to be a student? What have we overlooked in our preparation as a teacher? Are we missing some context that would help us impact ALL of our students differently, not just those who do not conform to our standards? Where can we find a better shared perspective with the student so that, together, we can experience curiosity and discover things collaboratively?
