What are the best practices for editing content in a collaborative environment?

Knowing what precisely is your scope of work and what's expected of you in the workflow with clear communication is crucial. It is natural that certain edits are obvious and certain edits will need justification in the form of a comment. Having a comment for changes you're unsure of helps everyone. As an editor we can sometimes get very strict and inflexible in terms of how something is supposed to be. But breaking those rules if it can be justified for creative value is essential.
