What are the most common challenges when conducting user journey mapping?

Muitos ainda não entendem a importância de se realizar pesquisa, muito menos jornadas de serviço, porém é nosso papel como service designers fazer com que as partes do projeto compreendam essa importância. Sem esse panorama, há o risco de as informações se desencontrarem ou agregarem pouco valor.

Be clear about what you are trying to achieve. You will likely maximise the benefit of the analysis if you are truly user focused. That means understanding what task they have and their full 360-degree experience (not just screens) of carrying out the task. Likely you are focused on a product/service provided by the company you are working for.... possibly just looking at some screens. Watch out: if you only look at that service and just eg the digital part of it... you will likely miss many insights. Consider researching competing products and services. Talk to people who have the task to carry out but never used the product/service from your company... (as as people who have, obv!). Also... look at *every* aspect of the experience.

The most common challenges that I've seen in journey mapping: 1. Securing the synchronous time for people from various teams to do a) the customer research sessions, and b) the mapping process itself 2. Consolidating and updating data 3. Right-sizing the customer journey Why these three (3)? 1) I believe customer journey maps are only valuable when they build shared understanding, and that understanding is best built through doing the sense-making *together*. 2) Given that customer experiences are dynamic, journey maps are a "moment in time", so they would need to be revisited once in a while. 3) When doing customer journey maps during product discovery, this can mean uncovering various levels (or webs/facets) of the customer experience.

Here are two of the most common ones Lack of User Understanding: Sometimes, teams may not have a deep understanding of their users' behaviors, motivations, and pain points. This can lead to inaccurate or incomplete user journey maps. Biased Perspectives: Different team members may have different perspectives on the user journey, leading to biased maps that don't accurately represent the experiences of all users.

Identifying and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data to inform the user journey poses the greatest challenge for several reasons: volume, variety, silos, and quality... data is collected from web analytics, experience insight platforms, social media, user feedback, and CRMs, and that data is stored between departments and systems. To create flexible, adaptable, and relevant map for decision-making and strategy development, prioritize user personas, focus on key touchpoints and pain points, establish continuous feedback loops, and cross-functional collaboration. Most importantly, recognize that the user journey map is a living, iterative document, and be prepared to tailor it as business goals change.

Defining a user journey map may be a real struggle without data. This is mainly due to the fact that we cannot analyze and optimise user experience, and build a user journey based on assumptions. In order to have a better understanding of the users behaviours and needs, we can use a multiple triangulation in order to have valuable data, both quantitative and qualitative, and from various sources, which reinforce the validity of data, and the reliability of the results.

Co-relating the user journey progression w. r. t. input obtained from the user participants is a key activity based on the user data to infer the user journey map, to be done by the researcher. But data can be overwhelming and is prone to be skewed. Prioritized scope, complementing qualitative with quantitative methods and right amount of iterations and triangulations help experienced researcher to efficiently validate and analyze data to derive more accurate representation of user journey map.

You need the reviews of your peers so that you are not misled by your own ideas and prejudices. Also is a good thing to let everyone know about what the user is facing.

Journey maps are dynamic, considering a user persona or a perspective site visitor, they may have n number of possible journey or interaction with the product. An accurate observation of user's interaction with the product, how they feel, actions they make and edge cases they face and what can be improved, is very essential to have a better understanding on user's journey which makes the journey mapping a better representation.

User behaviors and expectations change over time, as do products and services. A user journey map is not a one-time project but a living document that needs regular updates to remain relevant. Iterating on the map based on new data, feedback, and changes in the service or product can be time-consuming. Ensuring the map stays current requires a commitment to continuous research and validation.

Having iterations is inevitable since people learn, we get more information, we conduct more research, etc. What makes iteration a challenge is when to have it. Iteration could be a challenge in parallel with product roadmap and deliveries. Here organising feedback and new information can help to prioritize them and order based on the importance and its impacts. After that, you can decide whether iterations can be within the current process or in the next version.

One thing to be particularly careful about is interjecting your own biases into the users journey. Put yourself in their shoes. Interview people that are your target audience to ensure you are addressing issues that matters most to them. Insights come unexpectedly so look for them intentionally. 😊

I also think it's important and sensible to make sure that as many different and diverse users as possible are surveyed when collecting the data. This leads to fairer and more accessible services and products. It is also important for the map to develop possible scenarios in case things don't go smoothly.

Navigate your user's journey your self. Don't rely on the map that sits on Miro (or other tool). Create your own account, buy the product, check your own experience on the field always. Your own experience gives you a lot of insights for a less costly time spent.
