August is National Language Month in the Philippines! 🇵🇭 National Language Month or Buwan Ng Wikang Pambansa is an annual observance that promotes the national language, Filipino. Filipino is often confused with the Tagalog language, but they are not the same. Filipino is a language based on Tagalog, but it also includes Spanish- and English-derived words due to the history of Spanish and American colonial periods in the Philippines. The Komisyon Sa Wikang Filipino (Commission on the Filipino Language) takes the lead in organizing events and initiatives, which often include school programs, where students wear traditional clothing, sing Filipino songs, and perform folk dances. The Komisyon also now recognizes the country’s other indigenous languages as part of the festivities. I had the honor of attending the incredible Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival today alongside Massachusetts State Auditor Diana DiZoglio, Vanna Howard and Rady Mom (Members of the Asian Caucus), Paul Lee (Chair and co-founder of the Asian Community Fund), and Bora Chiemruom (former ED and commissioner). It was a privilege to witness the vibrant celebration of culture and community. Special thanks to the festival organizers for the opportunity to address the audience and share the vital work of the Asian American & Pacific Islanders Commission (AAPIC). This year’s festival was even more special because one of the traditional long boats was restored, funded by the AAPIC Small Grants Fund. Seeing the beautifully restored boat in action was truly inspiring, and it was wonderful to witness such strong community engagement with over 30,000 attendees. The Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival continues to showcase our communities' rich heritage, and I’m grateful for the chance to be part of this celebration. This past weekend, we celebrated Tongan Day, reflecting on the rich culture and values of the Tongan community. As the Executive Director of the Asian American & Pacific Islanders Commission, I'm privileged to engage with the diverse communities in our state, fostering connections and understanding. Having spent four year in Papua New Guinea, I've grown to deeply respect Pacific Island cultures. It was an honor to participate in a delightful event hosted by the Tongan community. Their warm hospitality, prayers, music, and performances left a lasting impression on me. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Tongan community for their gracious welcome, making me feel like a cherished guest.
