If I could describe yesterday’s Asian Festival in 2 words, it would be that it was PURE JOY. What could be more #joyful than seeing 300 performers ages 2 to 85 from 13 Asian countries (Burma, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, China, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Thailand, Taiwan, India and Vietnam) performed their cultural dances and songs with such #PRIDE and #JOY. Thank you to our sponsors and to all the community members who came out to celebrate with us. Thank you especially to Yarlennys Villaman from Governor Maura Healey’s Team, Yasmin Padamsee Forbes from the AAPI Commission, and State Senator Robyn Kennedy for joining and celebrating the 21st Annual Asian Festival with our community.

Come work with me! The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Asian American & Pacific Islanders Commission is hiring a new Communications Coordinator intern 💻 This is a part-time internship for academic year 2024-2025, with an expected commitment of 10 hours per week, paid at $26.00 per hour. While primarily remote, all applicants must be based in Massachusetts. Full commitment to an understanding of racial equity, diversity, and inclusion work is required. To my future intern, here’s what you should know: 🌺 You’ve heard of working with a dynamic team, but this role allows you to learn the ins and outs of working with a public Commission. As staff and interns, we support 19 state-appointed Commissioners in serving AAPI communities across the Commonwealth. 🌸 We’re actively adapting a three-year, multi-pronged strategic plan. Your work will directly contribute to our community engagement and visibility efforts, allowing us to be a bridge and a more effective resource for Massachusetts AAPI residents. 🌺 We’ve just begun planning for the 2025 Annual Unity Dinner. Last year, at this sold-out event, we recognized AAPI individuals and an organization making a significant social impact at the local level. Your event marketing assistance will help us to unite an even more ethnically and geographically diverse audience for next year. Emphasis on Growth 🌱 While a sample of responsibilities are listed in the job description, this program is ultimately designed to cultivate your interests and areas of professional growth. 🌱 By the end, you will walk out with a diverse communications portfolio in copywriting, graphic design, content creation and more. Emphasis on Inclusivity ✅ We tried to eliminate logistical barriers whenever possible. While all applicants must be based in Massachusetts, this role is primarily remote. You will have the opportunity to attend in-person events as needed and as desired. ✅ While all applicants must be currently enrolled in higher education, we accept everyone from 2-year to 4-year institutions and graduate programs. ✅ We separated required qualifications from additional desirable qualifications. For example, it’s great if you’re pursuing a related degree, have prior communications experience, and have lived experience as an AAPI individual – but these things are not mandatory. We encourage everyone to apply, regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status. And we’re excited to help you grow as a communications professional! 💌 To apply, please email your resume and cover letter to me at [email protected] by July 14, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Today, I had the honor of representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts AAPI Commission at the 21st Annual Asia Festival in Worcester alongside Commissioner Tuyet Tran . It was a pleasure to stand with Commissioner Tuyet Tran, Senator Kennedy, and Yarlennys Villaman from the Governor’s office. The festival showcased dances from Cambodia, India, and across Southeast Asia and beyond. Later, I traveled to Lowell to attend the World Refugee Day event hosted by MBMM at the Sampas Pavilion. Despite the rain, it was heartwarming to see Commissioner Meena Bharath who with many committed advocates for justice were there to support activists and refugees people who came out to enjoy vibrant dances from various ethnicities including Burmese, Ugandan, and Egyptian. Surrounded by such diverse communities, events like these are a testament to what makes Massachusetts truly great. #AAPI #Diversity #CommunityEngagement #Massachusetts

The AAPI Commission celebrates World Refugee Day. Organized by the UN and first celebrated on June 20, 2001 at the 50th Anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, this day honors the strength and courage of those who were forced to flee their home countries due to conflict. World Refugee Day gives us all an opportunity to foster empathy and understanding for one another. #WorldRefugeeDay
