Über uns

AAPI Victory Alliance works to empower Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, connecting AAPI communities and their leaders, to promote awareness and action for progressive AAPI causes. We build AAPI political power across the country by providing education on progressive issues; creating and advocating for policies that affect our communities; and building alliances with organizations to help AAPIs exert their power and be the margin of victory at the local, state, and national levels. We believe in a strong and diverse America. We stand up for the protection of civil and immigrant rights, access to quality education and healthcare, opportunities for economic growth that are mutually beneficial for business and labor, and the protection of the environment.

Leaving the campsite better than we found it.

We’re thrilled to share that the AAPI Victory Alliance won the Cooperative Impact Lab AI Hackathon in NYC with our project aimed at combating mis/dis-information in the US AAPI communities ahead of the 2024 election! Congrats to AAPI Victory Alliance & Varun Nikore for winning the Cooperative Impact Lab AI Hackathon in NYC on Friday! 🎉 I was proud to have the opportunity to help in an advisory capacity as the team worked on a project that utilized #generativeAI to translate videos going viral in the Hindi community, summarize disinformation claims, and provide counter-narrative messaging. Great working with Varun Nikore, Liam Considine, Anupam Tiwari, Maria del "Rosario" Palacios,  Sarah Marilyn Barrick, Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman and Marshall Seid!! 🤝 I am excited to see how AAPI Victory Alliance will be building on the Hackathon results to expand their efforts in combatting misinformation in the US Asian American (and) Pacific Islander communities ahead of the 2024 election. As their social sharing partner, the SoSha platform will be helping amplify accurate information on social media through AAPI Victory Alliance's network of trusted messengers. Kudos to Kate Gage & Kemi for hosting such a well run program! 🙌 P.S. If you're interested in the Cooperative Impact Lab AI Hackathon series, check out their next event in Chicago during the Democratic Convention (will add a link in comments for more info). #AI #CivicTechnology #Misinformation #SocialMedia

Director of AAPI Community Safety & Belonging | Community builder facilitating spaces of belonging, justice, and healing for all

This week, I was deeply honored to have been invited to The White House to participate in a powerful roundtable with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Representing Daya Houston , alongside AANHPI advocates from the AAPIAgainstGunViolence Coalition, we discussed the alarming rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, the gun lobby's targeted fear-mongering, the tragic increase in AANHPI youth firearm suicides, and the devastating intersection of domestic violence and gun violence in our communities and urgently called for culturally responsive and linguistically inclusive strategies that address these complex, intertwined issues and ensuring that life-saving information and resources are accessible to all members of our diverse AANHPI populations. Grateful to my colleagues at AAPI Victory Alliance , Newtown Action Alliance , MomsRising.org , Stop AAPI Hate , Hope and Heal Fund, Gregory Jackson Jr. and Erika Moritsugu Earlier that morning, the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, issued an advisory, declaring gun violence as a public health crisis, which made our advocacy take on even greater significance. Dr. Murthy's call for comprehensive measures, including universal background checks and improved gun storage laws, aligns with efforts to protect domestic violence survivors, reduce suicide by firearm, and unintentional deaths. His emphasis on increased funding for firearms research and better data collection is crucial for developing effective interventions. As June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month, I'm filled with a mix of heartache and hope. At Daya Houston, we remain committed to empowering South Asian survivors of domestic and sexual violence through culturally sensitive services. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for policies that prioritize survivor safety, and committed to having tough, honest conversations about the intersection of gun violence and domestic abuse in our communities. This isn't about taking sides or reducing complex issues to simplistic arguments. It's about acknowledging the pain, fear, and loss that gun violence brings, while also recognizing the nuanced perspectives within our diverse community. This work is messy, uncomfortable, and often heartbreaking. But it's also vital. I'm honored to be part of these critical conversations, to speak truth to power, and to advocate for our clients and their families, whether it be in family rooms, social media, among friends, or at the highest levels of government. #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth #EndGunViolence #AANHPI #DayaHouston

DayaHouston, along with AANHPI advocates from AAPIAgainstGV, was invited to the The White House to participate in a powerful roundtable discussion and share perspectives about the types of gun violence we see in our communities and the support needed. Daya shared statistics on how South Asian DV clients are affected by gun violence both in Houston and across the country. Collectively, we asked the Administration for concrete steps to address issues around gun violence + AANHPI community with both a culturally competent lens, as well as in the diverse languages of the communities we represent. The White Office of Gun Violence Prevention pledged their support and urged us to continue working in collaboration with their Office. Daya is proud to be part of these critical conversations and advocate on behalf of our clients and their families at some of the highest levels in our nation's government.

President & Executive Director, Asian Pacific Fund | Recognized Philanthropy Leader, Executive, and Strategist | Non-profit Board Member – Committed to the health and well-being of marginalized communities

Everyone needs to know that the AAPIs Against Gun Violence Coalition did WORK yesterday at the White House Roundtable on Gun Violence in the AANHPI community. Among the insights dropped: The gun industry has invested a ton in marketing to Asian Americans, capitalizing (literally) on our community’s feelings of unsafety due to the pandemic and anti-Asian hate (57% of Asians who bought guns since 2020 were first time buyers…40% of those guns are not safely stored at home). So we’ve now thrown in a whole bunch of guns into a community that is already at higher risk for youth suicide and domestic violence homicide (and worth mentioning again - 40% of those guns are not safely stored). One of the roundtable participants described it as “throwing a lit match on dry kindling”. The Roundtable participant recommendations: (1) culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health and substance abuse services for AANHPIs, (2) cultural and linguistic education on gun safety, storage, and DISPOSAL (apparently very hard to get rid of a gun), and (3) a root cause analysis of what drives gun violence because it’s different in every community (spoiler alert - structural and interpersonal racism drives violence in the Asian American community). Grateful to have had the chance to sit alongside amazing researchers, advocates, and survivors who work on this issue with their full heads and hearts. Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, Asian Pacific Fund President and Executive Director Carolyn Wang Kong joined a roundtable hosted by the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and the Office of Public Engagement. Joined by our partners from the Hope and Heal Fund, AAPI Against Gun Violence, AAPI Victory Alliance, and Chinese for Affirmative Action, among others, the convening aimed to assess and address the impact of gun violence on the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community. Our community faces compounded challenges related to gun violence, including increased risks of suicide and domestic violence, coupled with the influx of firearms due to targeted marketing that exploits AANHPI individuals' feelings of being unsafe and targeted by hate crimes. Given the growing concern about gun violence, our community must advocate and collaborate on providing culturally sensitive mental health and substance abuse services. We must also seek culturally appropriate strategies for firearm storage and disposal and address the root causes that lead to firearm purchases and gun violence. AANHPI advocates from AAPI Against Gun Violence shared their perspectives on the gun violence crisis and urged the Administration to take concrete steps.
