Very proud of my colleagues at AARP Foundation for bringing these insights into the world to promote food security for older adults. Stigma prevents far too many from enrolling in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Our team looked at barriers and tested marketing language to identify messages that are most effective at countering stigma and motivating people to apply. Here's what we learned!

Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (#SNAP, formerly food stamps) leads to fewer hospital visits, emergency department visits, and long-term care admissions for older adults. And yet, despite its benefits, only 30% of eligible older adults are enrolled in the program. AARP Foundation's Jackie Budilov, MPH, RDN and Anam M. Bhatti examined whether using behavioral science could remove the stigma around SNAP and normalize participation. People across the country are struggling to get by as housing costs climb. Grateful to Moneywise for highlighting this issue and AARP Foundation’s Property Tax-Aide program. Renters and homeowners with low incomes can access property tax relief through over 140 state and local programs nationwide. Our new online resource helps determine eligibility for specific programs by location. Please help us spread the word.

Community was the cornerstone of Norma Trevino's active, engaged lifestyle. As daily connections and meaningful work disappeared during the COVID-19 pandemic, Norma faced an unexpected challenge: how to maintain her sense of purpose in a world on pause. That’s when she found the AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program (#SCSEP) and the phone number for her local office in Texas. Within two weeks, Norma started a new job at a birding center, working in its museum and gift shop. As Norma discovered, SCSEP is an increasingly effective program for older adults. In 2023, program participants graduated three months faster, reducing the average program duration from 21 months to 18, and they secured jobs earning 25% more. #FutureOfWork

Here's some good news: A new law in Massachusetts now prevents home equity theft, a practice where cities and towns take a person’s home to recoup back taxes and then keeps any money left over from the sale of the home. The changes follow a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that struck down a Minnesota law permitting the practice. AARP Foundation lawyers filed a brief in that case supporting Geraldine Tyler, a 94-year-old woman who lost her condo after she failed to pay $15,000 in back taxes, fees and interest. Court documents showed that Tyler’s county sold the home for $40,000 and kept the $25,000 surplus.

Project Director Sharon Lavengood describes the Senior Community Service Employment Program as her community's "best kept secret." The program matches unemployed older adults with training opportunities at local nonprofits and public agencies. Jobseekers can build their résumés and self-confidence while earning income and serving their communities. In 2023, our program served 11,527 older adults, helping them generate $96,268,570 in new income — a 9% increase from 2022. #SCSEP | #FutureOfWork
