Our Border Rights Project team is working tirelessly to support refugee families in Tijuana, where children are facing delays of up to ten months just to secure a CBP One appointment to seek asylum in the U.S. While these families wait in uncertainty, we're ensuring that their children can still pursue their education by helping the families to enroll them in local public schools. You can make a meaningful difference by donating essential back-to-school supplies. Every child, regardless of where they’re from, deserves the chance to learn, grow, and succeed. Together, we can give them the tools to thrive. Supply list: Pencil cases ✏️ Backpacks 🎒 Black, blue, and red pens 🖊 Glue sticks  Round-tip scissors ✂️ 12-piece marker sets  24-piece colored pencils Abacus & Geometry sets 🧮 English-Spanish dictionaries 📗 Hard-cover lined notebooks Hard-cover graph paper notebooks 📒 Hard-cover double-lined notebooks Arts + Craft supplies 🎨 Donation drop-off sites:  Olimpica Dry Cleaners 🔸 1031 Market St. San Diego, CA./ (619) 234 3455 🔸703 Union St. San Diego, CA./(619) 235 9417 🔸 1001 Broadway, San Diego, CA./(619) 228 6847 Drop-off hours: Monday - Saturday, 9am - 6pm Al Otro Lado  🔸Calle Cristóbal Colón 705 on the corner of Calle Primera, in downtown Tijuana, i.e., zona centro. If saving your life was dependent upon whether you were selected by a computer algorithm, what would you do? If saving your life was dependent on you having an address in the U.S., but you knew not a soul who could receive you, what would you do? These are questions that thousands of refugees face every month as they try to seek asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Under current Biden policies, refugees must use the smartphone app, CBPOne, in order to secure an appointment to be processed by US authorities. The app is notoriously glitchy, available in only 3 languages, has no disability accommodations, and requires refugees to enter a U.S. address in order to secure an appointment. Wait times for these coveted spots can take upwards of 10 months, leaving refugees to wait in  border cities that are among the most violent places in the world. A recent Newsweek article pointed to the government’s allegations that refugees are creating multiple accounts on the app to increase their chances of being selected for an appointment by the algorithm, and that this somehow constitutes “gaming the system.” When interviewed by Newsweek, our Border Rights Project director Nicole Elizabeth Ramos had this to say, “Any one of us, including the CBP commissioner himself, if we were in a position where we feared for our lives and the lives of our children and were told that whether we could save our lives… was dependent on our account being selected by an algorithm, of course we would be involved in multiple accounts.”   CBP One is an illegal policy that forces people to place their name on a digital waitlist in the sky. Every day refugees in Mexico die because they cannot access medical care, food, shelter, or because they fall victim to violence, including instances of people falling into the hands of those they were running from. A long wait at the border can literally mean death. The government should stop criminalizing refugees for doing what any one of us would do if it were our lives on the line, and instead of creating barriers to justice, should comply with the federal court’s order in Al Otro Lado v. Mayorkas I-- and process refugees at U.S. ports of entry upon arrival. Link to the full article below! https://lnkd.in/gDRKZeQp

💥Today is the very last day to donate to our San Diego Gives campaign! When you donate to Al Otro Lado through this campaign you are supporting our work in San Diego County, including two very important initiatives: 🔸Our life-saving humanitarian aid for asylum seekers in the Otay Mountain Wilderness at severe risk of heat related injuries, and 🔸Our work with immigrant day laborers fighting to provide for their families Because of restrictive asylum policies, asylum seekers are forced to take more treacherous paths in order to reach the US and exercise their legal right to seek protection. We have seen this first hand as we continue our humanitarian work in the Otay Mountain Wilderness providing food, water💧and supplies along remote migrant routes where temperatures can reach the hundreds🥵. Additionally, our humanitarian efforts also extend to day laborers in San Diego County, many of whom arrived in the U.S. with little more than a backpack, seeking a chance to provide for their families through strenuous construction jobs. Recognizing their immediate needs, we supply them with essential work gear—shirts, boots🥾, safety glasses 🥽, gloves🧤—and even canned food 🥫. Understanding the broader challenges they face, we also come equipped with diapers, often requested by those caring for young children 👶🏽. Beyond providing these necessities, we connect them with resources to help secure more stable and long-term employment opportunities. Your contribution can bring hope, dignity, and a brighter future to those who need it most. Together, we can make a lasting impact in their lives. Consider a donation today 🤲❤️! ✨Click on the link below to donate!✨ https://lnkd.in/g2ze2wFk #SanDiego #philanthropy #donateforgood

Nuestro comunicado a continuación. Al Otro Lado Alma Migrante, A. C. 🌟We are excited to be part of the San Diego Gives campaign, a campaign that connects passionate donors with local organizations working to positively impact the community.
