I spy with my little eye... 2 more major red flags in freelance writing job ads. ❌ A company, in this day and age, still thought it was appropriate to pay freelancers based solely on traffic to their articles (per 1000 views). Someone is a solid 15 years behind the times. Now look. Some companies do this as a sort of "bonus" structure for high-performing content. But it should never be your base pay, and your base pay should be acceptable on its own, otherwise the traffic-based pay isn't legitimately a "bonus." What's wrong with traffic-based pay? You have very little control over traffic. It's not your job (unless you're contracted separately to perform marketing services) to promote your clients' websites. Pulling in visitors / traffic is their job, not yours. But that's the point on their end. If your pay is tied to traffic, you're more likely to do that marketing work unpaid to drive eyes to your articles. It lets the client be both cheap and lazy while they reap the bulk of the benefits from their contractors' work. It's a tactic that fell out of fashion a long time ago for good reason. Don't fall for it. ❌ Another one looking for freelance writers advertised applicants must have the energy for 45+ hours of work per week. 😄 😂 🤣 No. Here's the thing. You'll see some freelancers rant on LinkedIn about job ads mentioning 40 hours per week, saying no freelance job requires that. But while they're sometimes correct about that particular role, on a broader level that's not true. Some freelance roles do require full-time hours. But it's generally on a very limited basis. I'm not even talking "fill in to cover someone's maternity leave for a few months" kind of limited basis. That's often handled under a contract W2 role, which is different from a contract 1099 (freelance) role. An example where 40 hours per week is perfectly fine is something like coaching or training. This can be on-site requiring travel for a week or two, or it can be remote. I've done this remotely for SEO and marketing firms for example, where I train their staff (usually in press release writing and distribution so they can take on the work I used to do as a freelancer when I decide it's time to move on from that particular gig for whatever reason). But insisting up front you be available for 45+ hours per week? And on an ongoing basis?? Yeah. That's not freelance work. That's exploitation. Stay far, far away. #Freelance #FreelanceWriting #Jobs

Emily S. was one of the first freelance writers I got to know early in my career. And she's an incredible person. If you don't know Emily, she's been going through a rough time for a while. Back in 2017, she was diagnosed with brain cancer, and her tumor is inoperable. She's gone through so much since then, having to fight for care in ways no patient should have to.
