Do you know how the human brain regulates emotion? If you’ve ever fought the urge to scream when upset, you can thank your brain for working overtime to activate specific regions in your anterior prefrontal cortex. A new study found that these brain regions are unique from the ones used in emotion generation, and their increased activation helps us resist negative responses (like screaming). Researchers are optimistic that targeting these regions for therapy will improve mental health treatment. ALS research has seen many exciting updates this year! The biggest came just two months ago, when researchers identified the genes connected to brain cell loss in the disease. Findings like this will have a massive ripple effect on other neuromuscular diseases like SMA, which is why supporting brain research is so important. The human brain is capable of amazing things, and we’re learning more about it every day. For example, Columbia University researchers just discovered the brain can control the immune system’s response to inflammation. (Coincidentally, our current large-scale research initiative is focused on the brain’s own immune system and its response to neuroinflammation, or brain inflammation.) This brain-immune interaction is thanks to a specific circuit in the brainstem that modulates inflammatory activities. Activating this circuit could reduce inflammation and thereby offer a promising new therapy approach for many immune-related diseases. Swipe for more!
