AsAmNews covered the film debut of "Love Has Two Meanings" in the article "Unity is Strength: Oakland Chinatown Elders Tackle Public Safety." The short film follows 12 Chinese elders as they participated in the Community Safety Education Series organized by Asian Pacific Environmental Network and Asian Health Services. Each course included field trips to racial justice focused experiences such as the Black Panther Museum and San Quentin State Prison. Through these experiences, they explored the roots of crime and violence and gained insights into advocating for a safer, more inclusive community. As we approach our Annual Benefit Gala, we're reflecting back on the memorable galas that brought us together over the past 50 years. Dr. Thu Quach, AHS’ President, presented in Louisville, Kentucky on the Mental Health Needs of AA&NHPI Youth at the National Asian Pacific American Caucus of State Legislators, comprised of over 200 state legislators from 37 states across the country. She underscored the importance of disaggregated data to identify disparities for specific ethnic youth in depression and suicidal ideation and the need for culturally-responsive, community defined strategies that address systemic barriers and stigma that impact under-utilization and under-diagnosis in the AA&NHPI population. The Sacramento Bee covered the recent AA & NHPI Roundtable Convening in the article “Language Access is a Top Concern for Asian Communities. What AAPI Leaders Say Can Be Done.” Discussing the goal of advocating for California Senate Bill 1078, AHS CEO Julia Liou stated, “The state (has) a vision for improving language access, so we are asking that the state really makes sure that vision is realized.” Assembly Member Phil Ting and Senator Dave Min for State Senate along with other leaders also provided their insights into the importance of establishing the Office of Language Access in the state of California Read more at https://lnkd.in/gitHxMcy

As part of #NationalHealthCenterWeek, Asian Health Services organized the AA & NHPI Health Equity Roundtable Convening in partnership with the CA AAPILC, the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs, and AA & NHPI Health Equity Coalition members. Organizers gathered with public health experts and leaders in Sacramento on August 6 for an important discussion on the significant language access, mental health, and anti-Asian violence issues faced by Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA & NHPI) community.      Thank you to our White House (White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders) and Federal partners (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)), including Erika Ninoyu, Kota Mizutani, Jeffrey Reynoso, DrPH, MPH, Melanie Fontes Rainer, who highlighted the implications of newly approved federal language access regulations in health care on California’s health policies and standards.     Thank you also to Secretary of GovOps Amy Tong and CA State Chief Equity Officer Pam Cheuh, CalHHS Chief Equity Officer Dan Torres , Cal HHS Assistant Equity Officer Maureen Keffer, for your participation!  Gratitude to the AA & NHPI Health Equity Coalition members who served as panelists and moderators.     Language access continues to be a priority for Asian Health Services. #SB1078..
