Jacob, a 29-year-old with CHARGE Syndrome, has been a client of ours since 2014. Despite having both hearing and vision loss, Jacob is generally stable and manages his various medical conditions with care. He relies on a total communication approach with an emphasis on American Sign Language. We are proud to spotlight him today on #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay. Jacob's autonomy is paramount. He actively participates in his care and daily activities, using his cell phone as a visual aid to navigate his surroundings. Known for his curiosity and exceptional memory, Jacob is a calendar savant and enjoys exploring both physically and through his smart device. His physical mobility and keen interest in learning aid his self-advocacy. After aging out of the North Carolina public school system at 22, he benefited from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and participated in the DeafBlind Immersion Experience at the Helen Keller National Center. Currently, he lives with his parents, receives IDD services via the innovations waiver program, and, through the support of his BAYADA team, works part-time at a local coffee shop. He enjoys outdoor chalking, community activities, academics, and creating holiday or birthday cards. He continues to engage in CHARGE Syndrome conferences and hosts a local summer gathering for individuals with deaf and blindness and other disabilities. Looking ahead, Jacob and his family are exploring Supported Living Level 3 (SL3) services to ensure his long-term care. For more about Jacob, visit his Facebook group 'Jacob in CHARGE' or his website www.jacobincharge.com. #jacobincharge #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay #DisabilityPrideMonth #ThisIsBAYADA #BAYADAProud #WeLoveWhatWeDo

Potentially inspiring a new generation of home care clinicians, BAYADA nurse Lindsey recently attended a career day at Gateway University Park Elementary School, where she educated students about what it’s like to provide high-skilled nursing care to her clients. In addition, she had the students practice wound care and medical administration using Care Bears. Thank you, Lindsey, for teaching by example and being a great inspiration for potential future nurses. #ThisIsBAYADA #WeLoveWhatWeDo #CareerDay #NursingInspiration

Welcome to our new series, "Be You," sponsored by our Pride Employee Resource Council (ERC). Throughout this series, we have the opportunity to feature different team members as they explain how BAYADA creates safe and supportive spaces for them to bring their authentic selves to work each day. Meet Mark Wussler (he/him), a BAYADA Physical Therapist in Maui, Hawaii. Mark finds BAYADA to be accepting and tremendously supportive. “My director gives me the opportunity to speak to our entire staff every year during Pride Month on different topics of interest concerning our diverse community,” he says. Mark’s story is both inspiring and inspirational. After coming out in 1977, he faced challenges but found that “they were not as difficult as the weight of trying to live my life being untruthful to the people I loved.” Mark is the founding member of the Different Strokes swim team in San Diego, CA, established in 1985 and still thriving today. He was also a founding member of the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics. Mark is proud to share the history of the LGBTQIA+ community. He finds BAYADA not only tolerant and accepting, but also encouraging of celebrating and being proud. Every year, he continues to educate his BAYADA colleagues by sharing a piece of LGBT history. Thank you, Mark, for being you! Learn more about our ERCs here: https://bhhc.co/3UOK3OH #BAYADAPride #DEIB #BeYou #LGBTQIA #PrideERC
