Could you lead a megaproject? Hear from the masters Three leaders of successful megaprojects delve into the nitty gritty of what it takes to lead them in the latest episode of the 21CC podcast for The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). On the panel are: • Jacob Mumm, head of Bechtel Corporation's global Public Infrastructure division, whose projects include the Keeyask hydropower project in northern Canada, and the new metro system for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; • Davendra Dabasia, CEO of Mace Consult, whose portfolio includes the 2012 London Olympics, the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and Toronto’s ongoing, multi-billion-dollar subway extension; • Ambrose McGuire, AECOM’s Europe Programme Management Lead, who helped deliver many billions worth of infrastructure in Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup, and who has been programme director of the joint venture delivering the twin-tunnel Lower Thames Crossing in London, UK. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eNuN5HxR In this frank and pacey discussion full of examples from their own experience, the panellists explore: • What behaviour they’d nominate as the most helpful in getting megaprojects over the line; • What a winning culture in the leadership team looks like, and how to foster it; How to cascade that culture all down through the megaproject’s total organisation; • How to manage stress in the full glare of public and political attention. Megaprojects have a reputation for overruns and delays but, as the panel finds, success is achievable with the correct mindset, preparation, and diligent practice. With megaprojects increasing in number and scale around the world, this discussion will help anyone who aspires to take part in what Jacob Mumm believes are among “the last great human endeavours”. #megaprojects #gigaprojects #projectmanagement #constructionpodcasts

⬇️ Check it out: #Bechtel President and COO, Craig Albert, shared a behind-the-scenes look at Bechtel's mobile Hazard School where we're providing hands-on training and recreating real work scenarios to prepare colleagues for success in the field.

It's one thing to say we're committed to safety, but it's another to relentlessly pursue zero safety incidents every day—which is what we are determined to achieve at Bechtel.   I witness this dedication firsthand during visits to our teams in the field, most recently at Bechtel's mobile Hazard School in Ohio. The school's tagline—Improve, Learn, Experience—describes our approach to job safety and training.   At the Hazard School, new colleagues engage in hands-on training that simulates common job site scenarios, learning to identify and mitigate risks effectively. By recreating real conditions, we improve workers' situational awareness around their behavior, surroundings, and potential safety threats.   Our Hazard School resides in a 3,600-square-foot facility with 12 stations that cover essential practices, including the use of hand power tools, personal protective equipment, electrical safety, lifting and rigging, environmental and industrial hygiene, and more. We also conduct the full training in Spanish and other languages to make sure all colleagues benefit from the training.   It is hard not to feel the passion and unwavering commitment of our instructors; and I'm very pleased to report that 1,000 craft professionals have been through the program in Ohio this year alone.   When it comes to safety, our industry must continue to advance hands-on training experiences to enhance workforce preparedness, and Bechtel's Hazard School plays a crucial role in making this a reality.

The votes are in! Yesterday, we asked you a trivia question about Bechtel's involvement in the Olympics…With over 1,300 votes cast, did you guess it right? Let’s see! ⬇️ Since the 1980s, Bechtel has played a key role developing the infrastructure for 6 Olympic host cities. 🏅 Here’s a look back at some of our key projects: ✈️ Starting with the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, our #Bechtel team expanded the LAX airport, adding two new terminals, more parking, and a second level to the airport access road — all without interrupting normal operations. Bechtel colleagues were part of a committee that transformed 60+ facilities in Southern California into competition sites, training centers, support facilities, and Olympic Villages. 🏟️ In Barcelona in 1992, we helped upgrade venues and infrastructure to set the stage for a memorable Summer Games. From adding a new terminal at the El Prat airport and building a 27-mile beltway around the city, Bechtel helped transform Barcelona for the ’92 Olympics. ❄️ Gearing up for the Nagano 1998 Winter Games, Bechtel provided design, procurement, engineering, and construction services for a $110 million Winter Olympic convention center with our joint venture partner. The 430,000-square-foot complex featured a hotel, meeting spaces, and a press briefing center. ⛷️ Skiing ahead to Salt Late City in 2002, Bechtel helped develop a $1.4 billion budget for the Winter Games, which was the first to include Paralympic athletes. The budget included medical services and security, 600 projects—including the construction of event venues—and 3,000 activities, such as the Olympic Torch relay. 🚇 Fast forward to Athens 2004, we managed the expansion of the city's subway system. Our efforts added a new dimension to Athens’ transportation network, enhancing accessibility and leaving a lasting impact for the city’s future. 🚉 And in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, ahead of the city's first Olympic Games, Bechtel deployed a team to provide project management services in partnership with Brazilian engineering firm, Promon Engenharia, to help open MetrôRio’s new Line 4 – adding ~10 miles of underground rail and six new stations. At #Bechtel, we’re proud to support the Olympics, building on a legacy of transforming cities and connecting communities. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dP7KNK_V

Hydropower is one the oldest and most reliable sources of renewable energy, and Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH) is becoming an increasingly important solution to supporting the energy transition and maintaining grid resilience.    PSH is enabling access to clean, renewable, and independent energy by increasing grid stability and power availability as variable renewables, such as solar and wind, take up a greater percentage of global grids. ➡️ Here's how it works: By taking advantage of excess grid electricity outside of peak demand, water is moved from a source of lower elevation to a higher elevation. Then, during peak demand, the water flows down the same path through a turbine, generating electricity.      For more than 80 years, #Bechtel has been building hydroelectric facilities, including having designed or installed 50 hydro plants and more than 100 dams. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d7EvWwy6     #WithHydropower #PumpedStorage
