Have you heard of the Occam's razor philosophy? As a liability claims adjuster in CA there was a BI claim with 8 passengers allegedly in a late’80s Honda Civic. The group of adults and 1 child (age 6 and the translator for the group) met at the office to sign medical authorizations, and to negotiate a “quick settlement”. The translator explained they were rear ended, “everyone was hurt” and that his parents “wanted money”. None of the individuals admitted to having ID on them, to allow their photos to be taken or to give SSNs.          We were advised the damage was minor, as the insured had been able to stop almost completely before tapping the claimant car that “Suddenly stopped for no reason”. Additionally, the insured said there were only 4 people in the car, and they all got out, rubbed their necks and asked for money. The Honda in question with two license plate bolt impact marks on the rear cover was driven to the appointment and in the Lot. The claimants said they "couldn't remember where they were each seated at the time of impact. Pictures were taken and they were asked to get into the car. They squeezed 5 in the back and the kid sat on the passenger front seat’s lap. They could not close the rear doors. They got out and the kid told me “We’re getting a lawyer” as four of the claimant’s got out and walked to a second car that they had driven to the office in. No attorney ever came forward and we closed the claim out. Occam had pointed out the simplest answer is often the right one and we all know that eight people cannot reasonably fit into a Honda Civic, except clowns.  Clowns can do anything.
