Are Americans ready to embrace rail travel? Based on ridership numbers, the demand is out there. Amtrak is on track to set an annual record for ridership as of June. Over the past nine months, Amtrak has served more than 24 million riders, up 18% from a year ago. Down in Florida, private rail company Brightline has welcomed more than 700,000 passengers so far this year on trains in and out of Orlando. One Amtrak passenger told me that he appreciated how taking a long-distance train from Seattle to Minneapolis gave him a different perspective of America’s landscape. “I never would have had that opportunity had I just flown over it,” he said.
