For practically two decades, my identity was that of an American diplomat. It was who I was for almost half my life (I'm aging myself). My ethnic/religious background and political party affiliation were never an issue or particularly relevant. As diplomats, we are hired for our expertise and are non-partisan. Since the crisis in Gaza began, however, I faced and witnessed Islamophobic and racist marginalization, the likes of which I had never experienced before in the State Department. Even though I've gone public, I haven't discussed this much. But seeing how Palestinian-Americans, Arab-Americans, and Muslim-Americans were willfully silenced at the Democratic National Convention is motivation to speak out. The gloves are coming off, even though I’ll always be a diplomat at heart - it's time for some uncomfortable truths and a collective call to action. It’s about equality, justice, and peace.
