A storied piece of Cold War spy lore is once again making history. In one of #CIA’s most audacious Cold War missions, codenamed Project AZORIAN, we commissioned the construction of a 600-foot ship, the Hughes Glomar Explorer, and used it to secretly pluck a Soviet nuclear submarine off the ocean floor. "Chessie," a unique floating crane that was instrumental in helping to build the legendary ship, recently found itself at the center of another technologically complex mission: removing sunken, tangled metal from the tragic 2024 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland. https://lnkd.in/ey5DK5Dd #ProjectAzorian #Glomar #HISTINT #Chesapeake1000

CIA's so-called "Wizards of Langley"—otherwise known as Directorate of Science and Technology (DS&T) officers—are some of the most capable and creative minds in the US Government. Much of their work in the interest of national security is a closely-guarded secret…and probably even outside the scope of your imagination! For now, we'd like to share a bit on the origins of the DS&T as well as a glimpse of some of its greatest intelligence achievements. https://lnkd.in/ebG9F6N6 #InsideCIA #TheDirectorates #ScienceAndTechnology

This month, #InsideCIA will feature the Directorate of Science & Technology (DS&T). If you've ever watched a spy movie and seen special "gadgets" created for spy operations, they most likely would have been designed by officers in this directorate. The DS&T applies innovative, scientific, engineering, and technical solutions in support of our foreign intelligence mission. They use their specialized expertise to confront intelligence problems with effective targeting, bold technology, and superb tradecraft. Just inside the main entrance of #CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia is a white marble wall with a field of stars etched into the stone. It is the most sacred space on the Agency’s compound. Each star memorializes a life lost in the line of duty, a sacrifice on behalf of our nation. The Memorial Wall was created fifty years ago, in July 1974, when 31 stars were chiseled into the marble. It was done without fanfare. No ceremony was held; no pictures were taken. The stars and inscription simply appeared. Now, fifty years later, there are 140 stars on the Wall. Learn more about the history of CIA’s Memorial Wall—how and why it came to be—here: https://lnkd.in/dRS6kB2q
