Supporting the Democratic National Convention requires coordinating many assets and agencies. In order to communicate to the public, the Joint Information Center, or JIC, is staffed 24/7 during the event. Also, U.S. Secret Service Personnel Security Specialist Trevon Jenifer is a 3-time Paralympic medalist and is representing the U.S. a 4th time this month. The 2024 Democratic National Convention starts next week and is expected to attract thousands of visitors. As a National Special Security Event, the U.S. Secret Service has led security planning for more than a year, partnering with Federal, state and local agencies, including the Chicago Police Department. With protests expected throughout the event, demonstrations were accounted for in security planning to ensure the safety of DNC attendees, demonstrators, and Chicago residents alike, while respecting First Amendment rights. U.S. Secret Service investigations into financial crimes, including Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud and card skimming, have traced many of these social engineering scams to transnational organized crime. In 2022, financial crimes across the United States had a loss of about $10 billion, $1 billion of which was from skimming. Also, our agency is warning U.S. citizens of text-message-based scams called 'Smishing,' where criminals impersonate trusted entities to steal personal information or install malware.
