The end of the financial year is always a busy time for our Finance Department as they record transactions, reconcile accounts, review expenses and revenues, organize financial records, and complete countless other tasks in order to close the last fiscal year. Their diligent work culminates in the production of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the City. The ACFR contains details about all the City’s financial activities for the fiscal year. The report gives Berkeley residents, the City Council, investors, bond holders, Federal, State and County Agencies and the public a thorough and accurate look at the City's finances. Thank you, Finance team, for providing the data that enables informed financial decision-making.

The intersection of Claremont and Russell is looking better than ever thanks to repaving and striping coordinated by Public Works Engineering and Streets & Utilities staff. The smooth streets and clearly painted crosswalks coordinated by the Public Works team help make Berkeley's streets safer for all. This project is part of the City's annual street rehabilitation efforts, which completed 11 lane miles of street paving and 5 lane miles of surface sealing in FY 22-23. Thank you to Public Works Engineering and Streets & Utilities staff and to the members of the community who came out to celebrate.

As part of the 2024 Berkeley Juneteenth Festival, the City of Berkeley unveiled the newest addition to its public art collection - Delivered, Mable’s Promissory Note, by artist Mildred Howard.    The 10’ diameter bronze sculpture weighs nearly 3000 pounds and is installed on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Adeline Street, just south of the Ashby BART Station. The title of this artwork pays tribute to the artist’s mother, Mable Howard, who led the effort to oppose the above-ground BART line in Berkeley which would have divided the community.   Kudos to the Civic Arts team and the Civic Arts Commission for coordinating the commission, installation, and celebration! Berkeley earned a Prohousing designation from the State of California, an award reflecting the City's work to encourage housing development for all income levels. This designation supports local affordable housing in two ways: •  The City now has access to affordable housing funds dedicated only for Prohousing cities •  Local affordable housing projects will receive priority for competitive State funds The State recognized a number of efforts Berkeley has taken to increase housing: •  Removing minimum parking requirements •  Facilitating Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) production •  Providing regular development loans for affordable housing, which are available through a single Housing Trust Fund application •  Establishing the Small Sites Program to convert occupied multifamily rental properties as deed restricted affordable housing Kudos to staff across multiple departments who worked behind the scenes to make these changes to address the housing crisis facing our community. State funding helps support affordable housing projects such as those pictured: Maudelle Miller Shirek Community, Jordan Court, and Berkeley Way.

This week, over 800 kids kicked off summer break at Berkeley's day camps, with hundreds more youth scheduled to attend our sleepaway camps in the coming weeks. Our 350 staff, including 215 seasonal employees, guide youth through unforgettable summer experiences in art, sports, science, dance, and time outdoors with new friends. Big shout out to the Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront, and HR teams for the huge job of hiring and training these amazing seasonal staff. These recreation roles give young folks great job experience and a chance to grow a career. #recreation #berkeley #youth
