Between the rise of US food additive legislation and concerns on a host of food additives and contaminants increasing, consumers (and brands) are often confused about what exactly is and isn't safe. The non-profit Clean Label Project is hoping to help consumers and brands make sense of what's safe with its certification process, which analyzes products for substances that go beyond the current regulatory framework in the US, including heavy metals, glyphosate residue, antibiotics, and others. In an interview from the Natural Products Expo West show floor, I discussed the current state of food additives regulations, how brands are making sense of a "patchwork quilt of compliance," and the evolution of the clean-label trend with the organization's Executive Director, Jaclyn Bowen.
