    President and CEO: Dartmouth Health

Today, we reflect on the world-changing events that unfolded exactly 23 years ago. A beautiful, clear blue morning in Manhattan, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A day that thousands in those communities, and the hundreds of passengers on four hijacked planes, and all of their loved ones, neighbors, and America as a whole, had no idea would be their last. September 11, 2001, was one of the darkest days in our nation's history, but from the depths of that darkness came a spirit of unity, support and love that bound us all together when we needed each other most. In the divisive times we live in, it's hard to remember a time when we put our differences aside and remembered we all have to care for each other. In the face of unspeakable tragedy, we remembered. As we honor the heroes of 9/11 and grieve those we lost that day, I hope you'll also be reminded what we are capable of when we put kindness, empathy and humanity first.

Colonoscopy is the gold standard method for detecting colorectal cancers and removing precancerous polyps. Americans ages 45-75 are recommended for screenings, but the risk begin to outweigh the benefits of colonoscopy after 75, as preparing for the procedure can cause dehydration, the risk of bowel perforation is higher during, and so are pulmonary or cardiovascular complications after. However, more than half of adults over 75 continue getting colonoscopies. The adults often rely on the advice of their primary care providers as or not they should continue. "There should be lines of communication and systems of support to allow primary care providers to decide whether it is still needed," Audrey Calderwood, MD, MS, director of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics' Comprehensive Gastroenterology Center, told Medscape.

Congratulations to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center! The Kendall ED was completed recently and includes a number of modernizations to enhance care and the patient and family experience. SVMC’s ED serves about 25,000 patients a year. The ED also includes a new Emergency Crisis Area for patients in psychiatric crisis. This is a 5-room area, fitted with de-escalation tools. SVMC’s new Stout Thomson Waiting Area and Outpatient Registration opens to the public on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Today, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) celebrated the completion of a three-year renovation and construction project that modernized our emergency department, front entrance and other public areas in the hospital. Part of Vision 2020, A Decade of Transformation capital campaign, the $31 million project was primarily funded through philanthropic giving and included expanding and renovating the emergency department to create the new Kendall Emergency Department (ED), construction of a new front entrance, including the Richard and Pamela Ader Foundation Lobby, the Jackie and Tony Marro Café and the Stout Thomson Waiting Area and Outpatient Registration. Here are a few photo highlights from today's festivities, which also included burying SVMC's 2018 Centennial Time Capsule. Learn more about the project and celebration here: https://lnkd.in/emGvxjMt Thank you to all the donors, staff, community members and volunteer leaders who made this possible. We are also so grateful to our patients, who showed great understanding and flexibility during the construction process! #SVMC #Vision2020 #DartmouthHealth #ruralhealthcare #donorsmakeadifference #benningtonVT

A research team led by Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth has been approved for $2,108,902 in funding by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), to study patient and public involvement (PPI) in research. You may have heard recent reports of dangerous mosquito-borne illnesses in the region. Mosquito-borne illnesses are rare in New Hampshire and Vermont, but they do occur. Here’s what to keep in mind when going outdoors, according to our experts at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics and the New Hampshire State Epidemiologist. We've also included a video from Dartmouth Health Children's on what to look for regarding insect repellent for children.

Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women in the U.S., even though they are diagnosed with the disease at lower rates. For Cheshire Medical Center resident physician Betsy Assoumou, MD, MBA, this alarming statistic is personal. Born in Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa and raised in western Massachusetts, she watched her mother battle breast cancer for a decade, ultimately dying from her disease in 2016. As a child, Dr. Assoumou dreamed of becoming a physician, but initially pursued a career in accounting instead. Losing her mother prompted her to change careers in her early 30s and pursue her dream. Now 37, she's a member of Cheshire's first family medicine residency cohort. As she told The Keene Sentinel it's her way of honoring her mom's memory and doing her part to improve public health. “That was sort of the torch I lifted, in a way, to remember my mom, but also [to] be the thing she always wanted me to be, which is a doctor,” Dr. Assoumou said. “I wish someone had been there from the beginning for my mom to help her prioritizing her health because she was prioritizing education, striving, making a living. And I felt like ... the biggest impact I could have was just from the beginning, doing things that prevent a disease from happening.” https://bit.ly/4dUIUwM
