  • Have you ever wondered who helps bring the hummingbirds to patient windows? Meet the amazing duo of John and Ginny Bayliss! For more than 31 years, Ginny cared for patients directly as one of our dedicated nurses. Now retired, the couple continues to brighten our oncology unit with these bird feeders. It's been over a decade, and they're still committed to nurturing the hummingbirds (and our patients & staff), with visits to DHMC twice a week, from late May until late September. John is passionate about giving back to the Upper Valley. Along with volunteering at DHMC, he also has played a leading role with the Upper Valley Lions Health Closet. The Health Closet provides free medical equipment to residents of the community in need. If you're interested in donating or receiving equipment, find their link here: https://healthcloset.org/ Their kindness has been a beacon of hope for many people in the community experiencing challenges. Thank you, John and Ginny, for your dedicated service as Dartmouth Health volunteers!

  • Praise for his work is not new to Tech Cert David Bouchier, who cleans and disinfects rooms in the Hematology/Oncology section at Dartmouth Cancer Center. His supervisor Leo Daley says Bouchier gets accolades at least once a month. Last April, a clinical supervisor in hematology/oncology emailed Daley to say, “Just wanted to drop a note to tell you how we appreciate working with David Bouchier. He has a warm personality, never seems to get upset. Great team player. I recently had a patient and her husband tell me that he makes being in a hospital feel like home. Very positive and compassionate. He deserves recognition for the wonderful work he does on our unit.” The wife of a patient voiced similar praise for Bouchier on a phone message to Daley. “I just wanted to say that David B has cleaned the room several times and David has done a really good job and he has been so good in talking about his pride in housekeeping and the kinds of things he does and the way he cleans the floors and what is meant in terms of changes in infection rates. He was very informative and thoughtful and supportive and I just wanted to tell you that. So thank you,” she said. Bouchier responds with humility. He is careful not to make assumptions and he is always respectful whenever he enters a patient’s room. “I introduce myself, ask them where they are from. I develop a relationship. I never tell them, I know what you’re going through.” Bouchier enjoys his work and sees enormous value in the support he can offer patients while educating them on how he disinfects a room. His job is to clean and conduct additional ultraviolet disinfection to kill spores, pathogens, and any other invisible germs that could put patients at risk. He often talks to patients to put them at ease and allows them to talk if they want. Empathy matters to Bouchier. He knows what it is to have a loved one who is fighting cancer. His mother had cancer five times. The importance of being supportive and doing his job well is never lost on him. “People skills are important,” he says. We thank Bouchier and all of our wonderful environmental services teams. Help us celebrate them by liking and sharing this post as part of Environmental Services Week. 💚 And of course, you can learn more about non-medical professional opportunities at https://lnkd.in/dBNFgB7x.

  • DHMC recently won a $27.7 million federal grant targeted to not only increase scientific research in healthcare, but also speed up its implementation. As our chief research officer, Steven Bernstein, MD, told WCAX-TV, this grant will allow us to fund more projects, train more researchers, and strengthen relationships with partners in the region. “If we are good at what we do, if we succeed, we will develop tools, devices, diagnostics, medicine that will help people with all sorts of conditions,” Dr. Bernstein said. https://lnkd.in/eehpA5tD

  • We were named one of Becker's Healthcare's great hospitals in America for 2024! 🎉 Hospitals included in the ranking were selected by Becker’s for their dedication to optimizing healthcare, top-tier clinical work, deep commitment to patient safety, innovative advancements, in-depth research, educational excellence and high levels of patient satisfaction. "I am delighted that Becker’s has recognized the expert, high-quality care that DHMC offers our patients and communities,” said Michael Calderwood, MD, MPH, DHMC’s chief quality officer. “We take great pride in ushering in medical breakthroughs, offering the most cutting-edge treatments and technology, and staffing the most accomplished clinicians in their respective fields—without losing the personal, caring touch our patients expect, right in their backyard, in one of America’s most rural areas." https://bit.ly/4dV1yog

  • Dartmouth Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART) has been saving lives in Northern New England for decades. They respond to thousands of transport requests each year. 🚑 🚁 DHART operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and transports patients to any appropriate medical facility in New England by air or ground. They recently held an open house at the hangar in Lebanon in celebration of their 30th Anniversary. What a great turnout! There were some returning patients and their families who shared heartfelt stories with the team, which is a wonderful indicator of the type of impact this service has had on our region. Attendees were able to see the aircraft and ambulances up close. They even did a scavenger hunt for the kids which was a big hit. Thanks to the DHART team for opening up their facility and sharing this milestone with the community. More about DHART: https://lnkd.in/eB-DygyS

  • “Just enjoy what you do for work. I know I do.” If Mail Clerk Mark Richardson could give advice to others about their professional path, that would be it. For 24 years, Richardson has worked at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, which warrants its own zip code: 03756. Richardson makes it a point to keep conversations light, share jokes, and be polite to everyone he helps because he knows the importance of the work everyone does in the hospital. He stays busy, beginning when he sets up his cash box. Throughout the day, he sends and receives FedEx, UPS and USPS mail and parcels. He interacts with all types of employees, clinical and non-clinical, and sometimes patients, too. If personality traits were middle names, affable might be his, because Richardson understands that his customers might be coping with difficult challenges. “Be polite and have personality,” he advises anyone standing in a role like his on the second floor of DHMC in Lebanon, New Hampshire. “Try to joke and keep a light mood. It’s important,” he says. Join Mark, and other colleagues critical to the operations of DHMC, in one of many non-medical careers available. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eYuKviJS
