Our Land Use & Design team has been busy these past few weeks! On July 31st we hosted a Youth Workshop on Climate Resiliency and Land Use with the brilliant minds of Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corporation & Freedom Dreams youth leaders. We learned about climate change and how it’s affecting Detroit’s youth, then visited vacant land sites that present unique opportunities for building resilience for the future in our neighborhoods. Participants worked together to envision and design greenspaces in their community that the community is hoping to implement in coming years. Ideas included parks and greenways with opportunities for recreation and play, natural sanctuaries for rest and restoration, interactive community art installations, and a community urban farm with gardens to attract pollinators and people both! We also learned how youth would like to see better integration of greenspace with housing, and how new greenspace could better connect to existing cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

August is National Make-A-Will Month, an annual reminder to create or update a will. The month aims to raise awareness of the peace of mind and empowerment that comes from having a will. Our February report, "Keeping Your Family Home", was developed to gain an understanding of the scale of heirs’ properties in Detroit and provide the critical data for stakeholders to develop solutions that can help Detroiters attain legal ownership of their inherited homes. Heirs’ properties are family-owned properties inherited through generations without formal legal proof of ownership. Lack of legal ownership threatens homeownership, generational wealth, and neighborhood and household stability. Visit www.freewill.com to create your will and have a peace of mind. The Latino/Hispanic community has been an integral part of Detroit for more than a century. Despite its longstanding contributions to the city’s cultural and economic fabric, the Latino/Hispanic community confronts significant disparities in accessing resources, opportunities, and services that hinder their full participation and advancement in the Detroit economy. At DFC’s upcoming webinar event, we will be joined by panelists from education, workforce development, and Latino & Hispanic advocacy organizations for a special conversation focused on what solutions are needed to address the challenges identified in the brief.
