“Asking for help is really, really hard. It shouldn’t be, but it is. I have a huge amount of respect for those who are not afraid to say, ‘hey, I need help.’ It’s why DPR’s focus on serving the under resourced spoke to me right away. Having come from a background in military and law enforcement, the career change to construction was a bit daunting. However, after encouragement from a friend, I took the leap, and it turned out to be the best career decision I’ve ever made. I’m currently a Field Office Coordinator (FOC) in Greenville, SC, and I also serve as a volunteer Community Initiatives (CI) Champion for DPR. As an FOC, my responsibilities are diverse, from writing subcontracts to helping with insurance. I do a lot of different things to support the project and project team. My role as a CI Champion allows me to focus and drive initiatives that directly impact our community. For example, my first month on the job, I was able to help with a service project at Pendleton Place, which provides support for at-risk families and homeless youth. Now, I am a board member. One story that moved me was a young woman who had been at Pendleton Place since she was 15. She had been through unimaginable hardships but is now working towards an aviation degree. Knowing that DPR contributed to providing her a safe and stable environment is deeply fulfilling. Being a part of DPR has been a transformative experience. The company’s awareness and support of mental health, especially in an industry known for its grit and toughness, has been a pleasant surprise. It’s a culture that encourages openness and support, making it easier for employees to ask for help. Managing my time and prioritizing effectively has been crucial in balancing all my responsibilities at work and at home. Volunteering often extends beyond work hours, but it never feels like a burden because I genuinely love what I do.” Kayla Pearson serves as a FOC on the Clemson Advanced Materials Innovation Complex. One of the most rewarding aspects of her Community Initiatives role is seeing the next generation carry forward her acts of service. Please join Kayla as we celebrate Service September and being a DPR #pillarofconstruction. *Our Pillars of Construction series celebrates the diverse experiences and perspectives of DPR employees, reflecting on how our histories and culture shape us.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to share important information and create hope through action. The construction industry has a suicide rate greater than the national average and we at DPR are committed to taking care of our people and changing the culture around mental health. By having conversations about mental health, as well as sharing the warning signs for suicide risk with employees, we are working to raise awareness and create safe spaces at DPR. You are not alone. There is hope and help is available. You can reach free, confidential resources 24/7 by texting or calling 988.

    DPR Construction

In the latest issue of #DPR’s Great Things newsletter, we highlight the power of connection and teamwork in the construction industry. I’d like to share with you a story of what that means to me.   DPR’s culture has always been fueled by a shared feeling of belonging. But in 2022, after the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to reconnect in-person with all employees and gain deeper insight into what was on their minds at the time.   I went on the road with my teammates to visit every DPR business unit across the U.S. through an in-person event we called Culture Con. Every employee was invited to the forum to ask questions to a panel of local, regional and national leadership. No question or topic was off limits. There was no script, just real connection and conversation (the "con" in Culture Con). We also realized that to provide a tangible experience of belonging, we needed to offer our Spanish-speaking employees the option of listening and speaking in the language of their heart. That was the start of simultaneous translation at each event with headphones. Culture Con reinforced for me that true culture is the result of the actions each of us chooses to make. What I say, or what other leaders say, does not drive our culture. Our connections and actions do.   Since participating in Culture Con, one of my greatest joys has been visiting jobsites and connecting with others, and seeing them in turn connecting with their teams. When we talk about culture shift, it’s about changing how each person chooses to interact with others each day. When we choose to make connecting a priority, to support and share with and empower others, we do our part to change the industry for the better.   How do you make connection and collaboration a priority in your workplace? Comment below and let me know your thoughts.   Read the Letter from Leadership here: https://lnkd.in/gmDsQmSg
