EverQuote is #Hiring for a Principal Security Engineer in Belfast. We have been chatting to Matt Leebody to hear more about him and the role… - In three words how would you describe working at EverQuote? Collaborative, growth, and secure, of course - What technologies and tools does the security team primarily use, and are there any plans to adopt new technologies? The security team has a lot of freedom to explore tools and technologies - we mainly work in Python for coding, but it's more of a 'right tool for the right job' squad; we've worked on solutions that include Go, SQL, Terraform, Bash, SaaS tools, and more. We use AWS and its toolset often, as our cloud provider, and we're always looking at what AWS security enhancements come to market. Moreover, we're adopting a shift-left mentality that will always lead us to explore new tools and technologies in the future. - What does a typical day look like for someone in this role? As an organisation, we plan our big roadmap projects over months - and those get planned into quarters. For the team, then, they plan out the work for their sprints, and pick up from there on the work. That will include investigating security alerts we may have received from our tools, working on code, planning and design for future initiatives, collaboration inside our team and with other teams, working closely with our SecOps team on auditing and reporting. There's also time for looking at what's happening in the wider world; breaking security zero-days, or trends in the market, new tools that are released. - How does the company support and encourage professional growth and development? Everyone here is encouraged to look into their personal development, and 'innovation' time can be used to directly learn new skills. Meet Yang Tang who is talking all things ML, and about our exciting open role on the ML team at our Belfast, NI office! 1. What is your position and how long have you been with EverQuote? I'm the engineering manager of the Machine Learning Engineering team. I have been with EverQuote for a bit over ten years! 2. What is your favourite thing about working at EverQuote? Working with a group of talented people to solve interesting problems in a fast-paced and fast-evolving environment. 3. You are now looking for a Senior Engineer II to join the ML Team. How would you describe some of the responsibilities of the position? - Define, design, and implement platform-centric production-ready engineering solutions that make ML/Data science methodologies accessible to internal customers. - Operate and improve existing ML platforms, onboarding new projects and teams to these platforms and optimizing the process when necessary. - Manage and improve infrastructures that support ML platforms, e.g. K8s clusters, adopting best practices and new technologies when possible. - Previous experience with ML/DS is a plus but NOT required. 4. What are the top 3 things you are looking for in a candidate? - You are proficient in utilizing various forms of data, including business metrics and engineering logs, to solve problems and validate outcomes. - You always make an effort to understand the reasons behind important work matters - You actively seek out promising ML technologies and tools to incorporate into the team's tech stack. 5. What are the biggest challenges of this job? Understanding the pain points of internal customers and stakeholders when it comes to adopting Data Science / Machine Learning solutions and making these solutions explainable, accessible, and scalable to them. 6. How do you see this position evolving over the next 12 months? This position becomes the tech lead of the MLE team, leading the charge of defining, designing, and implementing the next-generation MLOps solutions and platforms in EverQuote. Also, you would expect to become an ML consultant to the rest of the organization, advocating ML, helping different stakeholders understand ML, and adopting ML solutions when needed. 7. What attracted you to working in Machine Learning? Working in Machine Learning is one of the best ways to understand how the world functions in this era. 8. What are your interests outside of work? I play tennis in summer and ski in winter. I follow F1 racing and European soccer closely. I'm also a big-time Dota 2 and Apex Legends player. 9. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? I would like to follow F1 races to travel around the world.
