Congratulations to FRESHFARM's own Nick Stavely, for his recent appointment to the DC Food Policy Council! 🎉 In his position as co-chair of the Food Access and Equity working group, Nick will lend his experience as FRESHFARM's Director of Incentive Programs towards the group's priorities that include enabling affordable food access in every neighborhood of Washington, DC. "I look forward to contributing to the Council's impactful work increasing food access across the city, integrating meaningful community engagement into existing benefits programs, and developing new initiatives with the other Food Policy Council members," Nick shared. 🚨 Enjoying the bounty of summer shouldn't make us anxious! And yet the July recall of dozens of Ohio-grown vegetables from grocery stores in 18 states (including MD and VA) for possible listeria contamination is a sober reminder of the perils and weaknesses of the traditional food system, which depends on long supply chains and big box stores. 🥒 This most recent recall includes cucumbers, tomatillos, green beans, summer squash, and an array of peppers. These are all vegetables at their peak right now and widely available at farmers markets in our region and across the country! 🫑 While choosing local produce doesn't completely eliminate the risk of food-borne illness, a short food chain—where there are fewer steps between where the food is grown and how it gets to your table—is safer. We are thrilled to introduce our newest FRESHFARM board member, Rachel Clark ! 🎉 Rachel Clark is the Policy Director at the The Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, where she leads a policy agenda that promotes public health and sustainability in the District of Columbia. Before joining the Redstone Center, Rachel served as a Legislative Counsel for the Committee on Transportation & the Environment at the Council of the District of Columbia, where she led legislative efforts related to food and nutrition, environmental protection, and public health. "As an advocate for sustainable food systems and healthy communities, I have long supported FRESHFARM as one of the most impactful local organizations working in these areas. Not only does FRESHFARM create vibrant community spaces at the city’s best farmers markets, but it also brings healthy, local food to food insecure residents through Produce Plus, helps local farmers grow their businesses and distribution channels at the Pop-Up Food Hub, and teaches DC’s smallest (including my own 4-year-old son!) to try colorful fresh produce in its world-class FoodPrints education program," Rachel shares.
