  • The establishment of Gift of Life Howie's House represents a significant milestone in Gift of Life’s 50-year history of service to the donation and transplant community. The House has provided comfortable lodging, home-cooked meals and supportive services in a warm and caring environment for transplant patients and their families. For 13 years, the House has been a steadfast source of comfort and support for transplant patients and their families, ensuring that no family is ever turned away due to inability to pay. Since its opening in July 2011, the House has served more than 400,000 meals, facilitated more than 13,500 trips to and from the hospital and provided more than $14 million in subsidized care to its guests. Recently, the House reached the incredible milestone of providing more than 100,000 lodging nights of care. The vision for the House came from its founder, former Gift of Life President and CEO Howard M. Nathan. When his sister needed a liver transplant, Howard discovered there were many families traveling long distances to Philadelphia for transplant-related care. They were sleeping in hospital lounges or in their cars because hotels were too expensive when combined with the costs and work disruption that come with long-term illness. As a result, Gift of Life Howie’s House was built and became the only transplant hospitality house in the United States to serve multiple organ transplant centers. In honor of Gift of Life’s 50 years of saving lives, join us in our goal to register 50,000 more organ donors and provide hope to the thousands waiting for a life-saving transplant. • Millions of Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease, and more than 90,000 men, women, and children are waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant, including educator Phillip Davis (pictured below). Unfortunately, communities of color are more likely to suffer kidney failure and make up more than half of the patients on the transplant waitlist. National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM) each August is an opportunity to promote healthy living and disease prevention while encouraging organ donor registrations and family conversations about donation. Learn more about #NMDAM and Phillip's story by click the link below. • For the last 20 of Gift of Life’s 50 years of service, Camp Jeremy has been bringing together children who received a life-saving transplant and their siblings for a week of fun and friendship. Camp Jeremy is inspired by Jeremy Clemens, a young heart transplant recipient who worked as a camp counselor. Jeremy’s family continues to hold this week-long day camp in his memory. You can honor transplant recipients like Jeremy by registering as an organ donor. Help us reach our goal of registering 50,000 more organ donors and provide hope to the thousands waiting for a life-saving transplant. • Gift of Life is grateful to kidney recipient Aniysha Trice for sharing her story at our recent staff meeting. Aniysha’s story showcases the resilience, compassion and determination of transplant recipients. The Philadelphia native lives with Lupus, a disease that attacks the kidneys. She spent years on the transplant waitlist, undergoing grueling dialysis treatments. She even overcame Lymphoma brain cancer and remains cancer-free today. A cheerleader and dancer growing up, Aniysha earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in human services. She shares with Gift of Life a passion for community service. Aniysha found the time and energy, while on dialysis, to work with those suffering from substance abuse, providing tools to help them lead successful lives. Aniysha remains grateful to her donor hero and shares this message, “People need to educate themselves about how important it is to register as an organ and tissue donor. You can save someone’s life and be a hero to someone like me.” National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM) is celebrated throughout August to increase organ donor registrations among communities of color, which make up more than half the people on the national transplant waitlist. You can help give people like Aniysha a second chance at life and honor Gift of Life’s 50 years of saving lives by helping to register 50,000 more organ donors.
