Violence Prevention Network USA, Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of the RESTORE Project, a pilot initiative that aims to prevent and counter hate and violence across the Southwestern Pennsylvania region. RESTORE equips trusted and influential community leaders—social workers, school counselors, healthcare professionals, faith leaders, therapists, teachers, and others—with evidence-based tools and methodologies for working with community members who may be gravitating towards hate and violence. After completing the comprehensive six-month training, these leaders are now accepting referrals for coaching services via the RESTORE Help Line: (412) 756-3643 or [email protected].

When do we value migrant lives? Last month, 49 migrant workers were killed in a fire at their accommodations in #Kuwait--one of the deadliest accidents in the country's recent history. The scale of the tragedy has prompted a renewed focus on fire safety and compliance with municipal regulations. Although welcome, the response has failed to deal with structural urban and migration policy issues that ultimately contribute to poor housing conditions for working-class non-citizens residents. Back from a week in Peru. Looking forward to an exciting new partnership that promises loads of research on decision-making and risk in a setting of uncertain legality, brewing conflict, and ever-present violence enacted on ourselves as humans and the natural environment we inhabit. My time in the Peruvian Amazon offered greater perspective on the urgent link between conflict, climate, and gender. Right at the intersection sits mining. With nearly 250,000 acres of destroyed rainforest, the latest Peruvian gold rush began with the 2007 with the spike in global gold prices. Artisanal gold mines sit across a spectrum of legality where issues of indigenous rights, land use, and poverty create a precarious mix of open questions. The use of mercury is slowly poisoning miners, local communities, and natural ecosystems. Reflecting on the inspiring celebrations for International Women’s Day and my opportunity to join the team at Bahrain Bourse to Ring the Bell for Gender Equality. New analysis by Heriot-Watt University, Dubai Campus and Aurora50 “the GCC Gender Board Index 2024” finds that Bahrain ranks #3 in terms of number of women serving on the boards of directors of public shareholding companies in the Gulf Cooperation Council sub-region. With the joined efforts of stakeholders from all sectors, we have the opportunity to elevate this percentage and create pathways for even more women to assume leadership roles. I'm excited to share that last week I successfully defended my dissertation! The research presented a conceptual framework for understanding gender difference in income tax payment patterns and how taxation adjusts for market-based gender disparities in income. I validated the conceptual framework against 33 countries, including high and middle income countries from Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Then, I explored the gendered consequences of a shift among 27 high income countries over the past 40 years in the purpose of taxation - a shift from taxation as a tool for increasing equity to taxing for economic growth. Income tax progressivity reductions associated with taxing for growth policies increased women's effective tax rates relative to men's rates and reduced the role of taxation in addressing market-based disparities in income between men and women. Global Insight is developing a new piece of research with a focus on measuring and testing the impact of increasing women's digital connectivity and leveraging that connectivity to increase women's economic empowerment. We are looking for partners that are (1) currently working on programs or (2) keen to expand into programs that include elements of access/use of phones, connecting to internet, digital literacy, use of digital tools to expand market for goods, use of digital financial tools.
