After sepsis resulted in a three-week-long coma and the amputation of both of his hands and legs, 65-year-old Steve Burrow simply felt grateful to be alive. "I chose right then to focus on what I can do and not what I can't do anymore," he shared. With the unwavering support of his family and clinical care from his Dallas, TX #HangerClinic prosthetist Danica Nordstrom MSPO CPO LPO, Steve regained his mobility and independence—and immediately set his sights even higher. Thank you to Greenville, SC clinician Brittney Curcio for representing #HangerClinic at the #MEC24 conference last month in Fredericton, NB, Canada. Drawing in #OandP participants from around the world since 1972, the Institute of Biomechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick hosts the renowned conference every three years, focusing on the newest technologies and advancements in the world of upper limb prosthetics. Brittney’s manuscript, “Integrating Novel Components Into Bilateral Pediatric Shoulder Disarticulation Prosthetic Fittings: A Case Study”, highlighted the limited component options available for upper limb pediatric patients and illustrated how additive manufacturing can provide valuable alternative solutions and outcomes.

"It isn't just about how amazing a prosthesis looks, or making adjustments to a device. It is about consistency and empowering the athlete to have the prosthetic device they need to accomplish their goals." - David Ojeda, CPO O&P Almanac's latest edition highlights several clinicians whose patients are competing in Paris, including #HangerClinic prosthetists Allison Neil and David Ojeda. Allison works with Paralympic swimmer Lizzi Smith, and David’s patient, Ezra Frech, competes in Para Athletics (Track and Field), where he just won gold! High school senior linebacker Anthony Speciale knows the value of determination and grit. After tearing his left ACL, LCL and damaging his peroneal nerve during a football game in 2022, the Florida native underwent surgery and persevered through his recovery and rehabilitation. Despite lingering challenges with foot drop, Anthony was determined to get back on the field. After connecting with National Orthotics Specialist Chris Toelle and clinician Carly Gambacorta at the #HangerClinic in Sarasota, FL, he was fit with a custom 3D-printed ankle foot orthosis to support his foot and ankle. Anthony's device has allowed him to return to the game and continue his dream of one day playing college football. Thank you to Chris, Carly and team for helping Anthony achieve his goals! #EmpoweredCareers
